Considering his backup makes $6m, $7m minimum is what should be expected.

There is no market at play here. They locked him up on their own.

Not signing extensions = seeing what the market rate is

Signing extensions = determining your own price

DM is right. Most of the time a player's contract has nothing to do with skills, but rather the situation a player is in. Conley's an average player, the Grizz just gave him Kevin Martin type money. Considering they gave Rudy Gay 20M though that's par for the course.

Heisley will wind up paying the full salary cap for a lottery team at this rate.

...where is the rule that says you have to make more than your backup? Brooks is the backup anyways.

There doesn't need to be a rule its common sense. Would you accept a starting position where you make less than your backup?

...it says it in section 2.3 of the book "Don't pay a PG who can't shoot and is most effective playing up tempo, starter money"

Four years ago, if you told people Mike Conley will have a better career than Greg Oden, people will say you are crazy!

Wow, that deal is unbelievable. Is anyone even watching the games? Conley isn't even that good right now, he's merely playing decent ball for the first time in his NBA career. Gay is the one carrying that team. And it's a three game stretch for Christ's sake. This is Cato all over again.

so the standard for contract negotiations is playing well for a month or two? are you freakin' kidding me?

and people wonder why there are so many bad contracts in the NBA.

personally, i wouldn't give someone a big contract until they play well for TWO consecutive seasons. most players can always have a career year. the real players will be consistent.

but preseason + 3 games? unheard of

The funny thing is Conley may turn out to be the better player than Aaron Brooks when everything is said and done.

the only thing brooks has over Conley is his 3 point shooting, Conley trumps brooks in passing and defense. When was the last time Brooks had more than 2 steals a game? Conley probably has better IQ too.

Just saying the contract isn't bad if you consider Conley's potential. Brooks is already at his ceiling and may be known as a 3 point shooting PG his whole career.

Why is AB at his ceiling when he's just closing in on two years as starter? He improved last year, is it that hard to believe he can continue to improve even if it is more slightly?

The Houston Rockets gave Kelvin Cato huge contract based on ONE Preseason game where he had a triple doubles. That's unheard of!

Some of you are saying "after three games" but I've caught two of their games on atdhe (because I think they're fun to watch) and you can just tell he improved his game. Memphis has a squad. The only problem was that they couldn't play together, but maturity is beginning to grasp that talented young roster.

some players simply reach their ceiling faster than others. the only thing AB can really improve on is his understanding of the game and that comes with experience.

his defense will always be porous b/c of his size. and his mindset as an offensive player is mostly to score; it's hard to change that mindset and convert that into a playmaking PG.

however, he's good for the system that adelman wants to implement OFFENSIVELY.

it's just that his defense is exposed b/c the starting lineup right now struggles defensively.
