Bad move by CD, but probably good for Eddie. He needs to get away from Houston and have a fresh start...
question, even if he does well this season, will we still want him? we will know more than anyone else if hes worth keeping. plus dont we need to save up to sign yao next?
The value of Kelvin Cato and his contract just went up tremendously. Wow. Who would have thunk it 2 years ago... that this scenario would play out for both of them.
Eddies problem has nothing to do with 'GEOGRAPHY'. Good move the the ROX - Eddie needed a kick in the rear.
Bill Walton just commented on ESPN that the EG trade with NJ is "NBA all time steal". We become a joke on this one. Glad that Rox made the right decision, not waste any time on EG and let the kid having a fresh start.
He also said that Mark Madson should be included with such names as Michael Jordan, Dr. J, and Wilkins after that dunk from the other night. Walton likes to exaggerate certain things but it was a steal though.
I'm a little dissapointed, but not at all devestated... i really did wish we could have locked him up tho. sad very sad
I think they should have extended him. They are basically cutting him loose now. Does anyone really think Les is going to pony up more than the MLE for Griff? He can probly get at least half that elsewhere based on his potential alone, and he most likely will choose to go elsewhere, imo. Well whatever, at least we know the answer to the trivia question "who was the biggest bust in rockets history?"
I am not behind the scenes so I won't attempt to second guess JVG, CD and company but this move just about insures he is gone. Unless Eddie is totally unsalvageable and a waste of a person and a player he will be picked up by someone else. He is too young and too much of a talent with so much potential for some young team to not take a chance on him. I mean all they have to do is sign him for a few mil and we can't match it and Eddie is gone. And the only reason that won't happen is if Eddie is just a total waste. So I hope that after they reviewed everything they came to the conclusion that Eddie was a hopeless cause and that they needed to cut their losses now. Because if that wasn't the case well we just threw away any hope of keeping him. Under the circumstances I can see why they felt it necessary to do what they did but if gets his act together we will probably regret it.
After 3 years in the league, potential doesn't get you paid, production does. If he gets anything other than the minimum deal from anybody in the offeseason (provided he even decides to play again), he would be insanely lucky. His NBA career is on life support at this point. Nobody's going to be burning up his phone lines this offseason; he'll be lucky if he EARNS his way back into the rockets rotation this year. I wouldn't worry about it.
I don't see Eddie Griffin getting much time now. The guy can't shoot. The only reason he gets any minute is probably if someone is injured.
I was thinking this exact same thing. What a lose. So much potential. Not to start any bickering but I just wonder if this would have happened had Rudy stayed. Please no fights over that statement, JVG is doing a fine job. I just know Rudy had a good relationship with his players and maybe Eddie needed that now.
How much talent/potential does Eddie Griffin actually have? IMO not much: Pros: 1. A good leaper 2. A good weakside shotblocker 3. average speed/quickness 4. One good year in college Cons: 1. Bad man defender 2. Crappy lateral movement 3. Tweener, too weak to play against big PF's, too slow to guard SF's 4. bad, horrible shooter 5. No low post game to speak of 6. Lethargic, not a high energy player 7. Hasn't done anything in 2years in the pros, and has made little to no progress. 8. Huge off court issues That's potential? I call that mediocrity.
If Eddie remotely gets his act together someone will pick him up I can assure you of that. The kid has amazing raw skills and he is only 21, he is only 21!!!. Picking him up is like getting a free lottery pick. He just doesn't bring it to the court on most nights but as bad as many people on this board like to claim he's been, I watched Eddie play some extraordinary games last year that made me think this kid has the ability to be better than Rasheed Wallace. So he didn't pan out but he is 21. He is only 21. Letting him go, I mean not extending him, may have been the right move but if it wasn't "oh the humanity of it"
Anyone on this board could have had all my earthly possessions by offering to bet me that we would not pick up this option. I am stunned. What I'd like to know now is whether all those trades in which we were rumored to be offering Eddie in recent weeks were attempts to gauge his value in the eyes of the rest of the league. The only way this decision makes sense is if we shopped Eddie and got back a league consensus that his value was nil. In that case, you'd have to give up on the idea of re-upping him in order to trade him.
I was for extending the contract, but have since changed my mind. I don't think any team will offer him much, and we will be able to beat any offer. My guess is the Rocks stow him on IR, or Suspending list, or deep on the bench if he comes back, and allow him to mature, and than at the end of the year guage his value. They will be the only team with any real knowledge of where his head is...... If another team wants to take a flyer on him, it will not be for much money. The Right move by the rocks, and it sets a hard line stand. I like it....though I would have bet against it. DD
Exactly, I don't understand what kind of potential Eddie Griffin showed in past two years? Just because he blocked couple shots once in a while? I was told the second pro year was supposed to be the most improved year for pro players, had we seen any improvement EG made last year or this preseason. None. And did EG add 15 or 20 pounds like many people expected? I am happy Rox make their move, and again, I wish EG can clean up his mess and pull himself very hard to the right track. Only he can save himself. There is always chance.
