You won't be targeted for being white, you'll be targeted for being a b****. Just be friendly with your neighbors (believe it or not most of them are just regular people) and also be a gun-owner, god knows everyone else on that block is.
If you feel unsafe then you can leave. I agree, don't be a b****. You don't NEED a gun. If you want one to "feel" safe then go ahead and buy one...punk b****.
If you can't afford to break the lease, then that's it. 6 months fly by quick. As someone who has tutored and done research in the South Side of Chicago (Washington Park, Englewood, etc.), Guguletu (near Cape Town, South Africa), and lived in Pakistan, please don't be overly alarmed at all these posters warning that you and your GF will be shot then raped (in that order). I appear Caucasian and I too had anxieties before living and working in the above areas. Houston, even somewhat sketchy places like the 5th Ward don't hold a candle to their sister neighborhoods like LA's Westlake or Detroit's Highland Park. It'll be okay, God willing. -Keep a very low profile. Stay alert at all times. -I urge you to have a bare bones style of living for the next 6 months. -At home, only have a laptop or two max. If you need a TV, buy a cheap CRT tube model off Craigslist for cheap if you need your cable fix. -Keep all valuables at a friend's or family member's house. That includes your car and its stereo. -Don't wear a watch or any jewelry; tell your GF to dress very conservatively. -Reinforce your door and its frame. Install a StrikeMaster if you can. Getter a better dead bolt. -Put a stick behind all sliding doors and windows. -Get motion sensor lights. Have a fake ADT sticker by the window. -Put up your curtains so people can't see inside ever. -Break your daily routine and come home from work whenever possible. -Consider getting a firearm and learn how to use it.
I worked in that area for 10 years. I was in an office building not trolling aroud the apartment complexes so I didn't see much crime.... well exept for the time the guy murdered his girlfriend at the mall about 5 minutes before I went there. Had to go over there several times at night....straight up New Jack City....
Fall creek area off beltway 8, summer wood, Kingwood, anything north of 2920 off 45 are much better options. I wouldn't hang around greens point if I were you. Good luck
LOL I really just meant don't be a dick to your neighbors. Like avoiding them at all costs, not being friendly ie smile and wave, acting all scared if someone talks to you etc. That's what I meant by being a b****. Although I like the way you put it much better. xD
The above map shows the racial makeup of Houston. Red=White Blue=Black Green=Asian Orange=Mexican I highlighted your area as "GHETTO" and then highlighted a few nearby neighborhoods that you should look into. My advice is that you call your rich uncle to bailout you out of your lease.
Pretty much, minus the garlic water. Or just be reasonable and live in a safe place. Rethink your priorities. I never understand why people live in dangerous areas or skip medical coverage when they can afford it. Drive a worse car, have a worse TV, phone, computer whatever. Safety and well being always comes first for me.
You're over thinking this. I just like to rob people. I like to rob the hearts of certain Rockets fan. Hiyo.
This map ticks me off. I grew up in the Heights, ten years ago that "ghetto" sticker would have been right on top of it. I'm glad its a better place now.
Hippie posers are taking it over so they can "rebuild" their bungalow by making a 1000 square foot POS and making it 4K and not feel like a prick.
Because to build those places a lot of good/ poor people got put out on their asses with nothing to show for it.
I ain't even mad. I just think it's hilarious that instead of tearing it down they leave 3% of the house intact for some reuse/recycle claim. I really like that area. The lots there are alone worth 300K, how do they have nothing to show for it? Sell out then go buy a brand new house somewhere else for 150K.
Yeah with all the arson that happen last year got rid of dilapidated houses and all of a sudden the realtor in that area build 3 expensive townhouses on one lot. Hmmmm
lol. The heights was never a ghetto. and if the misplaced poors owned the place, they would have been compensated for it when they sold if they were renters, it's not like they were guaranteed a 100 year lease that's what happens when Houston grows like it has over the past 20 years -- homes closer to the core increase in value
You are an idiot.. Most of Houston is not bad, but all of Memphis is a **** hole of unemployed thugs.
