So many are held near and dear to my heart, I've a Stiff Records tat in the waiting, Stax and Duck Dunn's I-IV-V lines will drive my heart to nasty things, Twin/Tone got me through junior high, but ABC/Dunhill? ...

Steely Dan, and their off-shoots? I'd be off shooting someone if it weren't for ABC/Dunhill giving a "songwriting" gig to Walter Becker and Donald Fagen.

Some good ones already named like Blue Note and 4AD. But I voted Columbia because of my love for Miles and Dylan. Capitol was very strong, though as well. Some of my other favorite labels include:

    Elektra
    Reprise/Warner Brothers
    Geffen
    Sire
    Atlantic
    Virgin

Atlantic Records, started in 1947 by Ahmet Ertegun, gave us the following:

    Ray Charles
    Art Pepper
    Ruth Brown
    Big Joe Turner
    Professor Longhair
    The Drifters
    The Coasters
    Chuck Willis
    Laverne Baker
    Bobby Darin
    Ben E. King
    Solomon Burke
    Wilson Pickett
    Aretha Franklin
    Buffalo Springfield
    Cream
    Yes
    King Crimson
    Led Zeppelin

    Atlantic also gave us:
    Phil Spector (as a producer)
Tom Dowd (as an engineer and Producer)

and, Atlantic served as the distributor for Rolling Stones records, which released each Rolling Stones record from "Let it Bleed" though "Some Girls".

"Greatest recording company of all time", to me, is which recording company brought the world the most great music and the most talent.

If that is the definition, then to me, no other record company comes close to Atlantic.

Oh man, seeing RMTex's post instantly reminded me of another great label - maybe the greatest blues label ever in Chess Records.

Great stuff there - I'll add Crosby, Stills, and Nash to your list.

Yes, but Atlantic's roster of talent even surpasses Chess', and that is saying something.

IMHO, Chess was the greatest blues recording company of all time, but Atlantic was the greatest recording company of all time.

Yep....I left a bunch out. If you include the subsidiaries Atlantic acquired over the years, namely Capricorn and Elektra, you could add the Allman Brothers, the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, and Warren Zevon to the list, among many others.

im very dissapointed that nobody mentioned the greatest, most evil black metal label of all time!

DEATHLIKE SILENCE - founded by euronymous, guitarist and leader of mayhem.

these guys make death row records look like a bunch of p*****s - they woshiped satan, burned chruches, desecrated graves, murdered rival band members and total strangers - all to prove who was the most EVIL!

all the top norwegian black metal bands were on the label - mayhem, darkthrone, emperor and the most evil of all...burzum (one man band led by count grishnackt, aka - varg virkernes, slayer of euronymous - varg stabbed euronymous 23 times in an attempt to wrest control of the black metal scene from him).

and unlike those posers in the OCP, euronymous' sword isnt plastic.

EMI. They released the greatest concept album of all time. Operation Mindcrime. That album is pure perfection from beginning to end.

Wow, every one of those bands is pure crap in my opinion. I can't wait till I buy a radio station and resurrect the Zrock network so that I can nuke one of those band's songs every single night.

I was going to say MoTown and Def Jam. They did a lot for the music they created.

"I'm afraid I have to disagree. Creed wasn't a great band, but they were certainly better than Franz Ferdinand, Coldplay, Fall Out Boy, Sum 41, and most of the other crap on the radio these days." - Aceshigh7 on 2/20/06

THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH CREED! They made good music! It's just become cool to hate on them for some reason.
