June 22, 1994 vs Knicks NBA Finals Game 7 21 points, final 7 pts

I seem to recall Kenny Smith hitting some free throws that iced the game in that game 7 so I don't believe Maxwell scored the final 7 points. That doesn't take away from the significance of the three Maxwell hit to all but clinch the first major sports championship in Houston's sports history.

OK man I am not gonna waste my time with someone who does not want to discuss the matter. I never said Maxwell's problems took anything away from his play with the Rockets. I have said numerious times on this thread that I was/am a fan of the way he played and realize his huge contribution to the Rockets in 1994 but my point is that he is a terrible person and it is in poor taste to celebrate such a jerk. Also if he would of not been booted off in 95 when he was, we lose to Utah and never win the title. He was becoming a cancer to the team at that point.

Oh yeah the reason Clutch City is Clutch City starts with Dream not Maxwell.

Dream was in Houston for a longtime before Clutch City.
Eddie Sefko labeled the Rockets "CHOKE CITY" after being down 0-2 to Phoenix.
Maxwell was the hero in game 3. That's when the label CLUTCH CITY appeared.
    http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/millennium_index.html

(May 13-15, 1994) Two hours after blowing the biggest lead in NBA playoff history, the Rockets flew out of Choke City down 0-2 to the Phoenix Suns. Four days later, the Rockets flew into Clutch City with the series tied 2-2. In Game 1 of the 1994 Western Conference Semifinals, Houston built an 18-point lead but lost. In Game 2, they had a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter but lost in overtime. "I'll never forget getting on the charter flight after Game 2," Rockets television commentator Bill Worrell said. "It was like a morgue." The Rockets didn't rise from the dead until the second half of Game 3 when they found themselves behind 49-41 at halftime. Then Vernon Maxwell got hot, scoring 31 points in the second half as the Rockets won 118-102. Houston finished "Desert Sweep" by winning Game 4, 107-96, to even the series.

the above tinman post is great, big fonts are always a nice surprise, and this thread rules.

Tinman - what about the time Vmax launched a three pointer with a few seconds left from between the three point line and midcourt to preserve that 20 game winning streak, or whatever it was, vs. the Hawks in - i think 1992? The crowd was taunting him, and he just launched it with plenty of time on the shot clock, turned to opposite side of the arena, and pointed out fans one by one saying "f- you! and f- you! and f- you!"

Also, as documented in "Keeping it Real," an exchange along the following lines:

Before tipoff-handshakes: Avery Johnson saying 'god bless you' to everyone on the rockets:
Vernon: "Look, motherf-er, this is a motherf-ing basketball game, God ain't got f- all to do with it."

amazing. i love him so much.

Max was the dude. I had the pleasure of hanging out him since I graduated from UF and he attended. It's strange how I got to know him, I was sitting close to courtside in the Summit (I miss that name) and yell at him to check Bryon Scott of the Lakers who was killing Vernon in the 1st half. Of course Vernon shot back F-U and of course I said, don't F me it's Bryon Scott that's F ing u.

Later that Night at the club he walked up to me and said I got enough WP's yelling at me, I don't need you doing the same. I laughed and said you should play better D and treat Bryon like you treat Jordan.

    My big time V moment.

I respected Maxwell as a player until the 95 season. I thought he played hard and had the talent to be a great player. He was huge in winning the first title and I have great memories of that. Unfortunately for him, he has some issues that he needs to deal with. I have no respect for a man that throws his talent and his life away. Why is it ok with you that he bailed out on his teammates during the playoffs?

He could have been great but he chose to be a punk. As a basketball player, well he might as well be Jordan, Bird, or Magic when in comparison to me. I'm 5'10", weigh 200 lbs and haven't played competitve basketball in nearly 20 years. I sure as hell hope he is better than me at basketball. Maxwell as a person is no greater than a pile of s***.

If you want my answer to your poll, Vernon, it's the shot against the Knicks.

Why is it ok with you to hate on Max on a thread that celebrates his great momments?

I got some things you should do to let your hate out in similar fashion as you are doing now.

    1. Go to England and go Mel Gibson Patriot on the Brits for the Revolutionary War.

    2. Go to the Toyota Center and tell people to buy Chevy Silverado's instead of Toyota Tundras. Make sure you blast that John Cougar Mellencamp song too.

    3. Start a new TV show, call it "American Good Person" Audition people and if they tell you they did something bad like beat someone up or not pay child support. tell them " you are NOT A GOOD PERSON "

    4. Go find Hulk Hogan and tell them that he's a bad person for using roids and that you thought he got big on "Vitamins and Prayers"

He's BETTER than Bird, Jordan, or Magic

Bird - At least Vernon admits he has kids. He doesn't ignore his daughter like Larry Bird

Jordan - Didn't have to pay $250K to tell his mistress to not mention that he's got a mistress

Magic - A small case of Herpes is better than HIV anyday

    BOOOM!

I like British people...and we already won the Revolutionary War.

I'm just not a truck guy so I really don't care.

    One Oprah is enough.

Well, he is a bad person for using illegal steroids.

By far the funniest thing you have ever said!

I've never said that those instances in their lives should be overlooked. Jordan has a gambling problem...hell, he's trying to open a casino. Never heard the thing about Bird, but, if it's true, he too is a jackass. Magic cheated on his wife, got AIDS and told the world about it. I don't think making fun of it is appropriate.

I'm done now. Thanks for the laughs. I have a hangover today and I needed it.

Exactly my point. Why are you hating on Maxwell for stuff he did ALONG time ago? That's alot of hate for so many years!

WRONG. Hulk Hogan is a great person!

    http://espn.go.com/sportscentury/features/00014103.html
Later that year, while a freshman at Indiana State, Larry married his childhood sweetheart, Janet Condra. Their marriage lasted less than a year. In a later attempt at reconciliation (it didn't work), they had a daughter, Corrie, whom Bird has had little contact with.

You're making fun of Max for giving a girl herpes!

Why are you searching for perfect people? sinless people. we are all sinners! ask Joel Olsten or Jesus!

    [IMG] [IMG]
You think I WOULD EVER let anyone get a NEGATIVE last word about Maxwell on a Tinman Thread? HELLZ NO!! This only makes me comeback STRONGER!!

    TINMAN,

How come you left this game out? This one got us to 22-1 in 1993, and he nail a 3 before the game winner at the buzzer.

    12/21/93 W - 90-88 @ Spurs Maxwell (35) Olajuwon (10) Olajuwon (6) 22-1

even though there were more important moments, i still voted for the GSW game-winner because it's the best buzzer beater i can ever remember seeing.

i remember 1.6 seconds. and there really should have been none. the clock didn't start when maxwell picked up the errant pass so GS somehow had 1.6 left even though there were only about 3 seconds when the play started and it obviously took a while for max to pick it up and shoot it. especially since the shot had so much arc. that's the main thing i remember. you couldn't even see the ball in the camera shot it was so high. i also seem to remember a warrior having fallen down under the basket so i bet he got a great look at the shot as it was about to go in. and yeah hardaway did damn near make the half-courter.

also, someone described that sequence where maxwell hit the 3 then 2 against the spurs. i think maxwell took and missed a 3, then dream got the board and threw it to smith who missed, then OT got the board and threw it to maxwell who made it w/ about 27 seconds left. then the spurs ran it all the way down, missed and elie got a board and called a timeout right at the free throw line with like 3.3 left. the maxwell got it, dribbled across to his right and pulled up from about 20 and let it go with like 0.4 seconds left. nothing but net. he loved to hit shots against the spurs.

The Phoenix game with 31 second half points! Without it, we win nothing. I still remember exactly where I was sitting watching that game!

Maxwell doesn't hide his badness. He is who he is. There are so many people that live a lie. It is better to be hot or cold, not lukewarm. Those who have the capacity to be bad have the capacity to be good. Those who are lukewarm and apathetic are sometimes a lost cause. We can only judge Maxwell as a b-ball player. The grey side of his life is public. I bet there are many "good" players whose private lives are less than stellar.

he was a very yin and yangish type of person

maxwell was great when he wasn't all jacked up the wrong way. but when he wasn't right, he was not right.

max isn't a perfect person, but who is? (other than myself, but whatever, it's about vernon remember?!)

anyhoo. my favorite shot was that game vs Golden State. That's all we did in Gym Class in the sixth grade. We all jumped out of bounds fading away.

I thought OT threw the inbounds pass that was intended for Hakeem, but it went to high, hit off the backboard, and max chased it down, and hit the fadeaway three. I was watching it in my couch, and i just jump straight up and yelled it was so amazing. too bad he was traded a few months later.

But when it all comes down to it, I rather lose with guys that will stick with me and not turn their back on me.

I value loyalty in people. It's just something personally big with me.

Best moments for me when he played Jordan. He used to call him "his airnes". I think he was thre best at guaeding JOrdan. I especially loved the game when he got in Jordan's ear, and would not back out.
Fights with Payton were fun too.

    Exactamongo!
He doesn't go off blaming Dream if he got caught with some chick other than his wife (See Kobe saying well Shaq cheats when he was trying to dip into some teenage funfare in Colorado)

He's not in the NBA for self promotion (see Ron Artest taking time off to make Hip Hop records)

He was a basketball player and badass!
He wasn't one to get a bodyguard or entourage. you want some of Vernon, well you can get it some alright.

People who voted this thread down are terrorists who try to terrorize the REAL ROCKET fans who remember Vernon's significance. I dont give a flying you know what if you Mormons think he's not a nice person. He was Rocket Legend. So was Ralph, so stop crying about Ralph and Vernon's kids, its their life. this is CLUTCHFANS and CLUTCHFANS is about the HOUSTON ROCKETS, not about who's morally correct. VERNON IS FOREVER IN HOUSTON ROCKET HISTORY. ... FOREVER! FOR-E-V-E-R!

Vernon thought the same thing. He felt the ROCKETS were unloyal to him.
Keep in mind Vernon is just the poster child for this, people forget that
    MARIO
    SAM
    ROBERT
    DREAM
    KENNY
    RUDY T

didn't exactly have a HAPPY LOYAL ENDING to their ROCKETS RUN.

REMEMBER DREAM??? HE WANTED TO GET THE HELL OUT. HE FELT DISREPECTED THAT FRANCIS WAS GETTING ALL THE SHOTS.

REMEMBER RUDY?? A ROCKET FOR A BILLION YEARS.. GOES TO THE LAKERS!!!

Don't place this pissed off unloyalty thing on Max.
You are all wrong on this thing. its about PRIDE.
VERNON HAD PRIDE WHICH WAS GOOD AND BAD. You think VERNON liked begining 2nd string to Clyde? Doesnt matter if its a HOF player. VERNON wanted to be the man, if he wasn't then he felt disrepected. That's just the way he is.
