You probably have it, but I think you can get Starcraft and the expansion disc as a set for about $20. An old, classic strategy game for the PC. I still play it sometimes... mucho fun.
Count your blessings. There was a time when after the first print was done and no reissue was in sight, it went for over $100 on eBay.
Yes, but it is darn hard to beat a computer program these days. It is easier for me to beat a pro player than a computer.
For Xbox... Surprisingly, I've found a lot of games on sale at Circuit City, some for $9.99...Besides sports games, I've picked up Manhunt from Rockstar Games, Fight Club and some games for the kids...I've also picked up for $29 the Tom Clancy trilogy & Unreal Championship 2... Right now, I'm playing ESPN NFL 2K5, which I love...I refuse to get EA sports NFL 06 as I hate the monopoly they created...
[SEMI-SPOILERS] I finished the main game and also one of the expansion packs for the PC version. Eh. The game is okay. I like the non-linear style RPG, but there are two main problems I have with this game. 1. Even though it is non-linear, it is VERY, VERY repetitive in terms of solving quests. All you do basically is go to a guy, he gives you like 5 different quests one after another, you solve them, and then he tells you to go talk to another guy, and then you basically repeat. And then quests seem all the same. You go to some ruins or some cave, kill a bunch of people, find some artifact and return it to the guy. 2. It is SO easy to power game. You get enough money and you can buy all your skills, attributes and levels. You also get enough money, you can enchant yourself a sword that will kill everything with one-two hits. I loved this game. I thought the storyline is very compelling and your main PC as well as your sidekick NPCs have depth to their characters. I always played light side (just didn't feel right killing a bunch of innocents). It's also hard to power game so all the battles are very competitive. I also played the sequel, the sith lords, and I thought that was great too. It did more to involve your sidekick NPCs in the game than the original. But the storyline was kind of weird, more complicated than the first game.
PS1- MGS ($10-15$)- RC, you're not a true MGS fan if you don't own the original MGS for the PS1. You know I love MGS3, but part one is just as good if not better. Remember, the graphics is one of the best for a PS1 games so it will pale in comparison to the PS2 two sequels. Its bad-ass in everyway...story,graphics,game-play and sound/special effects. Its easy to find and very cheap, go get it. Resdent Evil 1 and 2 ($5-$10)- A double classic horror on the PS1 that will make you jump out of your seats. Some of the best zombie blast-fest with cool puzzel solving. Metal Slug X ($10)- Who don't like MSLG? Part X is considered the best in the series. Some of the most beautifill hand-drawn art with tons of crazy explosion. Think of Contra on steroids with a heavy dose of humor thrown in. Those with a PSP, get the NEO emus and get this rom now...it runs perfectly with almost no slow down, besides its free!! PS2- GT A-spec ($20)- Can't stress how great this game is. The most immersive and highly detailed racing games ever made next to GT4. Everything in this game is near perfect. You got eye-candy graphics, best physic engine in a racer, 300+cars, 20+tracks and has the most in dept car tuning. I'd say its worth your $20 buc. Omnimusha 2 ($15-$20)- An underratted game series that blows away the first one in everyway. Its longer, improved gameplay,photo-realistic graphics and has some of the best boss fights around. Think Resident Evil with a sword in ancient times...thats basically what this game is. GradiusV ($20)- IF you're into shooting game, then you will love this outer space shoot'em up. Its better then R-type and Contra. Awesome weapon configuration. Beware though, its very tough and long! Best shooter on the PS2 with awesome graphics. Metal SLug 4/5 ($30-$35)- Price is a little high but hey, its two game in one and its still pretty new. Its just like all the other MSLG games like I mention above. IF you can't get enough of Slug, then get this.
I'm not a big RE fan, but I've always heard that the very first RE was the best. Hehe...Metal Slug...you must be a classic Neo-Geo fan, noize... BTW, has anyone ever beat Metal Gear (you know the one on the NES)? That is one hard mother of a game, and I still haven't beaten that sucker.
I've never played any new RE after part 3 and don't care too. Yes, part one is the best in terms of sheer scary parts and its just raw. Silent Hill is scarier, but I hate the annoyance of running in fogs trying to get to point A to B. I love classic 2D games and the Neo Geo just happen to have some of the best ones. Last Blade, Kings of Fighter,Makr of the Wolves,Pulstar and more. I got the original Metal Gear(nes) on my PSP and your're right its very hard and I'm still not use to it yet. Its not a bad game but its far from being great. Its better then Snake's Revenge thats for sure...that one sux.
I have to say, I played 10 minutes of Silent Hill and I stopped playing right after that cause it scared the crap out of me. Yeah, it's a shame...they don't make 2D games like they used to, like Castlevania SOTN....please, I rather play any of the Metroid 2D games over any of the 3D counterparts (and that goes for Zelda too). I'm a big KOF fan...KOF > Street Fighter (eventhough I grew up playing SF)....and Samourai Showdown was simply classic....I miss the good old days when arcades still existed and you could play KOF or SF on a big screen for quarter or so....ah the good old days.
Best series ever! The Monkey Island series. http://www.worldofmi.com/thegames/monkey1/index.php http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00004WGVX/104-3153733-0392701?v=glance
That's where the mods came into play for me. Some of the new enemies added in to the game were WAY more difficult than the regular ones. There were also some mods that would change up various stats to make even the regular enemies harder to kill. It still wouldn't be too much of a problem if you played the game a whole lot, but some of the enemies could kill you pretty easily if you weren't paying attention. Some of them even added some survival attributes to spice of the gameplay. So, maybe you did have the power of a god...but if you didn't eat, drink, or sleep much, you'd die. And there were other mods that worked with the enchantments, gold, skills, etc. As for your other point, the mods helped that out a little bit too I believe. Although I personally never really had a problem with the repetition of quests. Out of curiosity, which expansion pack did you have? It has been a while, but I think Bloodmoon did a better job of varying the quests than Tribunal, so maybe you should check that one out. My memory's fading on exactly what were developer-made quests and what were user-made quests. Seriously, the game was great, IMO, w/o the mods, but with them, it was on a completely different level. Woah... I don't think I ever said I was a true MGS fan. Although as I said, I'm trying to get the other two games, so you don't have to tell me why I need to play them.
I'm going to try and extend on my list of PC games, especially some RPG/strategy type games that pirc1 requested. Diablo 2 http://www.ebgames.com/ebx/product/163699.asp ($16 new) http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/197113.asp (89%) Chances are that if you're a PC gamer who likes RPG's, you've probably already played Diablo 2. But if you haven't for some reason, it is time to get it. Diablo 2 is definitely one of the best PC RPG's I've ever played. The game plays like a lot of PC hack&slash RPG's, although I think it does have a little more action than some other RPG's. My memory's fading a bit on the specifics, but basically you'd pick from 5 different classes: necromancer (my favorite ), amazon, barbarian, paladin, and sorceress. Each class has their pros and cons. I always like the necromancer since I could raise the dead or create these golems that would clean house for me. IIRC, the enemies were pretty damn hard too, especially some of the bosses. The graphics are probably a little dated by today's standard, but I think the CGI is the game is still top-notch. I think the story in Diablo 2 played off of Diablo 1, and since I only played a little bit of Diablo 1, so I can't really explain it all that well...that, and I forgot some of the parts. From what I could understand and remember, the story was pretty interesting. I think there was an expansion pack to the game, although I never checked it out. You might be able to find a copy with both of them included. Also, Diablo 2 seemed to have a good multiplayer mode, but I never really checked it out. Planescape: Torment http://www.nothingbutsoftware.com/catalog_type.asp?ProductCode=23338&ai=532 ($17 new) http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/187975.asp (91%) Sorry, but this is another game that I'm forgetting the specifics on...although I do remember it was a great game. It played a bit like Diablo, although it obviously had its differences. I think I remember there being more non-combat gameplay, such as conversations and fetching items. It also had a good sense of humor, IIRC. And besides some bits and pieces of the story, that's about all I remember. I guess just check out some of the reviews if you want more info. I think I need to get this game back from my sister. Heroes of Might and Magic series (HOMM IV being the newest) http://www.gogamer.com/cgi-bin/Gogamer.storefront/EN/product/001HER4?AID=307521&PID=603315 ( $20 new for HOMM IV) http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/470764.asp ( 82% for HOMM IV) I linked to HOMM IV, but I really liked the whole series. There all pretty similar, at least the later ones. For those that don't know, it is a RPG/strategy hybrid. You start off by picking a race, each of which has their own pros and cons. You start off with a home base, and with your Hero, you build up your city. Like other strategy games, you try to find sources of gold, ore, wood, etc., which help you build new things for your base. As you build up your city, you can start creating various creatures for one of your Heroes. The system is turned based, and at the end of the turn, the other players go. When you meet up for battle with another player, or even a random monster, you control a battle that is also turn based. Using commands, you'll try to beat your enemy. The game is pretty fun to play, especially since it has a bunch of mythological or fantasy type monsters. Something about seeing a battle with 50 Titans, 100 Gold Dragons, 500 Centaurs, 30 Genies, 40 Archangels, etc. just seems interesting to me. Deus Ex http://starvector.com/cgi/lp3.cgi?id+ca0790.html ( $13 new) http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/250533.asp?q=Deus Ex ( 90%) This is more of a FPS than an RPG/strategy game, but it does have some RPG elements that make it more of a thinking game than a plain shooter. Kind of like a modern TES game, you equip your character with armor/weapons, and a lot of your actions depend on your skills in various categories. There are also various ways of doing things. For example, you could bust your way through the entrance of a building, guns blazing. Or you could sneak your way in. Or you could even hack a security gun and use it against your enemies, and then just walk you way in when your done. Some games are starting to do that recently, but this was awesome back when Deus Ex came out. The story is great for a FPS-style game (no spoilers, but it does have some great twists and turns), and it has multiple endings depending on your actions. FWIW, the game did have a sequel, but from what I read, the series took a HUGE step backwards with that one. I never tried it, but it sounded like they took out a lot of things that made Deus Ex great (more FPS, less options). Also, this game was hard to find online. Some of the sites worried me a bit, so you may want to check in stores. I also just found out there is a site that lets you download PC games for a fee. Never tried it, but here's a link to the Deus Ex part of the site ( $10, so cheaper than the physical copy): http://www.direct2drive.com/78/product/Buy-Deus-Ex:-Game-of-the-Year-Edition-Download Here are some other games I played, but can't remember too much about: Gothic II (action RPG) http://www.gogamer.com/cgi-bin/Gogamer.storefront/EN/product/001GOT2?AID=307521&PID=603315 $20 http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/561413.asp 79% Neverwinter Nights (D&D style RPG) http://www.nothingbutsoftware.com/catalog_type.asp?ProductCode=33269&ai=532 $15 http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/188666.asp 89% Warcraft III (RTS, although with some RPG elements IIRC) http://www.gogamer.com/cgi-bin/Gogamer.storefront/EN/product/001WARCB?AID=307521&PID=603315 $30 (includes expansion and strategy guides) http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/256222.asp 93% That's really all I can think of for PC games in those genres; chances are, most people already have most of those games. I haven't played many PC games recently, so I can't really comment on some of the newer games.
