Midlake is officially my new favorite band of the moment. I think they made a video for every song, but check out these two. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kggVH8O9ynU"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kggVH8O9ynU" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/wtSyYewpiHE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/wtSyYewpiHE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
cool. Haven't seen this thread. Anything by Richard Bona I can't say enough about him so if you are curious check his story out HERE Pat Metheny - Secret Story - track 4 I think... man, that's good stuff. can't find that on the web at the moment, but Metheny fans check this out! classic pat... dude. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aJTgv4UNhOM"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aJTgv4UNhOM" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Here is a live video from my favorite band going on 4 years now. I'm a sucker for spoken lyric. And man these lyrics are incredible. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gwNe-omuhpg"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gwNe-omuhpg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> mewithoutYou "In A Sweater Poorly Knit"
This is the most obscure I could think of: Unknown Hinson (The King of Country Western Troubadours), he's the voice of Early on Squidbillies. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/0X69rIzFQDY"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/0X69rIzFQDY" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Unknown Hinson on "Rawk Music" <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/4LJf9fYM8-s"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/4LJf9fYM8-s" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Unknown Hinson on skinny womerns <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JGj_ZbN5Lpg"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JGj_ZbN5Lpg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> "Peace Love and Hard Liquor"
I tried, I really did, but only I got about a minute in before I had to stop the video because the "singer" sounded so annoying. I see their potential though. Here's a few from me... Band of Horses - "Funeral" <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ibE7IqEjni4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ibE7IqEjni4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Blue Epic - "Amnesia Please" and "Good Morning Paranoia" The SLIP - "Even Rats" and "Suffocation Keep" Guster - "Manifest Destiny" and "Satellite" All my suggestions can be found on myspace, so just Google "(band name) myspace" and there you go.
Regina Spectre is my nomination and even though I'm sure he's not obscure in Texas....... I've in a big Daniel Johnston phase again........
and for a couple of Aussie nominations which are defintely onscure try The Lucksmiths and Darren Hanlon
If you like spoken lyric, listen to Arab Strap. They are from Glasgow. So be prepared for the kickass Scottish accent.

I likes. If you're from Scotland you have to be good...(see Mogwai...) Man seriously everything you recommend is so good. I'm currently obsessed with Ghostland Observatory. CCR, I agree, it's somewhat hard on the ears at first, but the lead singer is so emotional and spiritually vulnerable, and his lyrics are the best I've ever heard...imo its somewhat like slam poetry set to music.
Not really obscure but here ya go anyway: Alexander O'Neal - Crying Overtime Robert Plant - Darkness Darkness Cutting Crew - The Broadcast Shanice Wilson - Do I Know You? Royce da Five Nine - Something's Wrong With Him Classified - Beatin' It Alejandro Fernandez - Quisiera Big Mike - Get Over That Godley & Creme - Cry Sade - King of Sorrow Oran "Juice" Jones - Two Faces Isis (formerly of the X-Clan) - Face the Bass Jon Butcher Axis - Tiger in the Grass Jon Butcher Axis - Life Takes A Life Prince - Reflection Christina Aguilera/Luis Fonzi - Si No Te Hubiera Conocido ...it goes on and on 'til the break of dawn. Yes yes yall.
Now this is my kind of thread. I personally produce Drum & Bass and I'm trying to get a demo signed, so I've got to recommend at least one d&b tune. And for those who think it's only a club music, electronic nonsense thing, people ranging from Thom Yorke (Radiohead, duh) to Andre 3000 (Outkast, duh) are big d&b fans. In fact it's pretty obvious the influence d&b has on some of their songs. Radiohead's Idioteque and Outkast's B.O.B. for example. Here's a more 'mainstream' d&b tune by London Elektricity: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TgsJiKP6shg"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TgsJiKP6shg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> And for something totally opposite, one of my favorite bands who looks like will never be popular is Ivy. This is one of the few videos I could find on YouTube, and yes, it's a cover of The Cure's Let's Go to Bed, but it is indicative of their sound. And they have a sexy French lead singer. Come on now! FYI, that's Smashing Pumpkins' James Iha in the video too. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lsFLJopYo-c"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lsFLJopYo-c" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> I'll second someone's Stereolab recommendation. I can only wish that I could write songs like them. Another French lead singer! Coincidence? <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/k1t6vYtNFcA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/k1t6vYtNFcA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
wERD. I word out Midlake on the ipod a while back. Did you know they're mostly all graduates of North Texas? Homegrown! BTW- I cannot quit the Silversun Pickups. The whole CD is outright amazing! If ya dig the Smashing Pumpkins even a little bit, check out this band before they hit mainstream.
The "Magic Potion" album by The Black Keys. I prefer their older stuff, which is more blues, but the new album rocks.
