Midlake is officially my new favorite band of the moment.

I think they made a video for every song, but check out these two.

Here is a live video from my favorite band going on 4 years now.

I'm a sucker for spoken lyric.

And man these lyrics are incredible.

This is the most obscure I could think of:

Unknown Hinson (The King of Country Western Troubadours), he's the voice of Early on Squidbillies.

    Unknown Hinson on "Rawk Music"

    Unknown Hinson on skinny womerns

I tried, I really did, but only I got about a minute in before I had to stop the video because the "singer" sounded so annoying. I see their potential though.

    Here's a few from me...

    Band of Horses - "Funeral"

    <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ibE7IqEjni4"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ibE7IqEjni4" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Blue Epic - "Amnesia Please" and "Good Morning Paranoia"
The SLIP - "Even Rats" and "Suffocation Keep"
Guster - "Manifest Destiny" and "Satellite"

All my suggestions can be found on myspace, so just Google "(band name) myspace" and there you go.

If you like spoken lyric, listen to Arab Strap. They are from Glasgow. So be prepared for the kickass Scottish accent.

I likes. If you're from Scotland you have to be good...(see Mogwai...) :)

Man seriously everything you recommend is so good. I'm currently obsessed with Ghostland Observatory.

CCR, I agree, it's somewhat hard on the ears at first, but the lead singer is so emotional and spiritually vulnerable, and his lyrics are the best I've ever heard...imo its somewhat like slam poetry set to music.

I like their Star Wars song.

The accent seems a bit overdone. Drama Queens. Give me The Clash.

Now this is my kind of thread. I personally produce Drum & Bass and I'm trying to get a demo signed, so I've got to recommend at least one d&b tune. And for those who think it's only a club music, electronic nonsense thing, people ranging from Thom Yorke (Radiohead, duh) to Andre 3000 (Outkast, duh) are big d&b fans. In fact it's pretty obvious the influence d&b has on some of their songs. Radiohead's Idioteque and Outkast's B.O.B. for example.

Here's a more 'mainstream' d&b tune by London Elektricity:
    <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TgsJiKP6shg"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TgsJiKP6shg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

And for something totally opposite, one of my favorite bands who looks like will never be popular  is Ivy. This is one of the few videos I could find on YouTube, and yes, it's a cover of The Cure's Let's Go to Bed, but it is indicative of their sound. And they have a sexy French lead singer. Come on now! FYI, that's Smashing Pumpkins' James Iha in the video too.

    <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lsFLJopYo-c"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lsFLJopYo-c" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

I'll second someone's Stereolab recommendation. I can only wish that I could write songs like them. Another French lead singer! Coincidence? :)

wERD. I word out Midlake on the ipod a while back. Did you know they're mostly all graduates of North Texas? Homegrown!

BTW- I cannot quit the Silversun Pickups. The whole CD is outright amazing! If ya dig the Smashing Pumpkins even a little bit, check out this band before they hit mainstream.

The "Magic Potion" album by The Black Keys.

I prefer their older stuff, which is more blues, but the new album rocks.
