ummmm... music "in the radio" and "on the TV" is usually rather uninspiring, to say the least. as a music-lover one must branch out beyond "old media" for a fix.
    the internets? streaming "radio?"

Two other good albums, if you like indie music:

"Source Tags & Codes" - ..And You Will Know Us by The Trail of the Dead
    "Silent Alarm" - Bloc Party

HA! Funny stuff, man. That's the guy from the SONIC commercials with the wife... :D Thanks.

Gotcha, the futants. Will try that, percicles. What bands did you see in Austin, finalsbound?

So... for the record... "obscure" in this thread means music not playing on the radio, TV, or advertised in the local newspaper, yes? MaN! I NeEd To GeT OuT MoRe!

SwoLy, bands play in Austin every night of the week. This is like asking Macbeth to name all of the pornstars he's shagged.

Wow, that's a lot of pop rock.

I don't know about "obscure", but here goes:

Salif Keita - "Yamore" or "Madan" (safe to say the best song ever)
Savina Yannatou - "Muniera" or anything else
Big Bill Broonzy - "How Do You Want It Done?" or anything else
The Shangri Las - "Right Now and Not Later" or anything else (there's only like 27 songs)
The Ohsees - The Cool Death of Island Raiders
The Weird Weeds - Hold Me
    X-Ray Spex - Germ-Free Adolescents
    Gogol Bordello - anything
    Exuma - "Obdeah Man"
The Boris + Keiji Haino album (I don't know how I found it...not on AMG)
Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt (puts Mastodon in their place, at the bottom)
    The Impossible Shapes - Tum
Vetiver - "I Know No Pardon" (probably my favorite song this year)
Anything Fela Kuti or Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (monstrously popular)
Mahmoud Ahmed - "Ere Mela Mela"
Freestyle Fellowship - Inner City Griots
    The Last Poets - s/t
Orso - My Dreams Are Back and They Are Better Than Ever

Alot of these bands listed play in Houston as well. Read the Houston music blog:
http://blogs.chron.com/handstamp/ for a taste of what tours around in Houston.

Whenever I see something interesting, I just go to Myspace music and pull up the artist's page, and they usually have a few tracks you can listen to for free.

I meant to ask which ones she has seen there that she has posted on this thread... but your answer is appropriate. :) I don't know who Macbeth is... oh, the horror!

Of Montreal, Loxsly, Broken Social Scene, Architecture in Helsinki, Bloc Party, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros, Minus The Bear, Cursive, Trail of Dead, Beep Beep,The Decemberists, Anathallo, British Sea Power, Colour Revolt...

There's literally at least a couple good indie shows in Austin every night.

That's the one. I guess their last album that I know of was probably 3 or 4 years ago. I hope he hasn't gotten totally lost in drugs. I know he was wanting to really get into DJ and dancetronica type music. Then I haven't heard anything in a long time.

This isn't East River Pipe's best work, but this is the only one I can find on Youtube:
