Thank a bunch. _________________________________________________________________ Since your 30 I'll steer clear of the stuff you should have picked up in the 90's ie Sonic Youth, Bloody Velentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, ect.... So here was some of my favorites this past summer. WHITE ROSE MOVEMENT - LOVE IS NUMBER - Very retro 80's fab. My 2 yr old niece seemed to enjoy this for some reason. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BTalWu46rz0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BTalWu46rz0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Peter, Bjorn & John - Young Folks - Has this silky 70's bubble gum sound with a modern indie twist. I couldn't get enought of this song over the summer. Had it on heacy rotation. I perfer the Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve Re-animation mix but the original is just as good. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/51V1VMkuyx0"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/51V1VMkuyx0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Lilly Allen - Smile Yeah it may be girly but the beat has a hip reggae feel and it's british so it gets automatic indie cred. P.S. This was the only girly song on my playlist this summer. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/zOFYffNk5DY"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/zOFYffNk5DY" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Long Blondes - Giddy Stratosphere (live) - This song is about 2 years old but it still rocks my socks off. The studio version picks up were Souixie and the Banshees left off. Cost me a pretty penny getting this on vinyl from London. <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kaxTkKiWgUQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kaxTkKiWgUQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Leatherface (Get the CD Mush or Horsebox): <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NWM9TdYw5NA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NWM9TdYw5NA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> Rilo Kiley (get The Execution of All Things or More Adventerous) not terribly obscure, but still very good: <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/8qUlY_iVsjo"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/8qUlY_iVsjo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> So obscure they don't have youtubes I could find for you (although I'm sure you can listen to them at Amazon or find mp3 somewhere): Squirrel Bait (80's punk with members that eventually became Slint and about a dozen other bands) get Skag Heaven Velvet Crush (power pop group that often work as Matthew Sweet's backing band on tours) get Teenage Symphonies to God Anders Parker (probably considered Alt-Country) get Tell it To the Dust
Wow, I'm missing so much in music. Thank you so much guys! I really appreciate the effort you have put into this thread. I have listened to every single youtube posting and I will check out every non-youtube suggestions in iTunes! Keep them coming! I'm having such a great time here. Mr. Brightside I cannot tell you how much I love Ghostland Observatory. I've been listening to them quite a bit since your rec. Awesome stuff. A few other pretty obscure but awesome bands... Loxsly Anathallo Ester Drang Ethan Durelle !!! (pronounced Chk Chk Chk) Ratatat A Whiper In The Noise Wolf Parade Grandaddy (not that obscure...but often forgotten) Spiritualized Mineral Colour Revolt Mew Islands (ex-Unicorns) GOOD call on Q & not U. "Different Damage" is an incredible album.
Yeah, their albums are great, but they still can't capture what they do live. Agreed on the Minus the Bear comment. Highly Refined Pirates is their best stuff. I've had Wolf Parade on steady rotation for a month or two. I like it. ----------- Did anyone else dig the newest Nada Surf album, This Weight is a Gift ? "Blankest Year" is a damn catchy track. (btw, the video of "Blankest Year" that I have found on YouTube is not the album version and it sucks) I've had The National - Alligator in heavy heavy rotation for a long while now. If you haven't heard it, check it out.
I just got "Pure Phase" from them just the other day from my manager at work. Havent listened to it yet, supposed to be some good stuff though, looking forward to it.

Dudes and finalsbound... WHERE THE F*CK ARE YOU GUYS getting so much music from? I mean, not in the radio, not on the TV, but where do you all just find "obscure" music????!?!?!? I need to get out more.
Still kind of the oldschool way for me. Find bands that you like, check to see who else is on their label (assuming it is a smaller indie label), see who they tour with, word of mouth, etc...
All my friends are self-proclaimed "indie kids." We see shows in Austin a lot. Lots of obscure music comes out of that.
Uhh...usually word of mouth, a lot of times when i hear about an artist i search allmusic for them, and below that are a list of similar artists, and i'll look into them as well. Just talk to finalsbound, she'll lead ya in the right direction
This one is definately not obscure, but the video is. I have friends in Europe and South America that I visit, so when we go clubbing I usually ask the DJ or visit the clubs webpage. Most of the time though we recommend stuff back and forth.
You're telling me you dont read Pitchfork Media? The horror! <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/LS4xTZUoyCQ"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/LS4xTZUoyCQ" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
