As Raven said, I have certainly typed it in chat where verbiage flies at a much faster clip. I honestly am not sure if I have written it on the BBS. I very well may have, but I also have no specific memory of doing such a thing. I must also confess that, upon initial initiation into the world of BBS life (which occured on this very board) I mis-read "lol" as "lots of laughs" instead of "laughing out loud." To this day, I am still more comfortable reading it incorrectly and they are so similar that I have not really had to train myself away from it. I also wrote "ROTFLMAO" once, but it was only to ask what it meant. Some counter-questions: Why would you think I wouldn't respond to a direct question? Why did you predict "no"? Why would not doing so be commendable? Resistance of net-lingo/slang?
thanks, rimbaud. 1. You seem to choose your spots, which is smart. I once asked you about your art (painting, if I recall) in a thread and never heard back, which was fine. But I was really interested, even though my posts are typically silly. 2. It seems you generally are careful with your diction, perhaps even proud of it. I couldn't picture a 'lol' in your posts, but I have limited data. Mainly, I am just goofing around with the question. 3. Well, more than being commendable, exactly, I'd say avoiding such abreviations is easily defended. I still can't figure out what some of them stand for (I too started BBS life, and am still exclusively active, here at CC). "lots of laughs" actually cracks me up for some reason. Could have been "levity, oh levity!"
Well, sorry, I must have just missed the question. While I do "choose my spots" I don't intentionally not answer a question - unless it is idiotic. Again, I apologize. In regards to the ancient question, I can answer it fairly easily despite not knowing the specifics. I don't really have a "my art" as I am an academic - art historian - and not an artist. That is not to say I have never produced art and I have certainly had training both in the US and in Europe, but I am first a scholar so my personal art suffers. In fact it has been three years since I have painted anything at all. I am trying to get back to it, though. I hope that brief summary belatedly answered your question. *lol*, you don't know the half of it! Suffice it to say I would have been abandoned as a child had I not been careful/aware. I am not really proud, though, as I think it is something that should be natural...I just expect it. I asked you the question because you have not been around that long - during a time in which I have posted very little - so I was interested that you had some kind of read on me. Yeah, it also has a nice phonetic quality that goes well with "lol" which is why I can't seem to shake it, I guess...especially when you slur the words a bit so that it is an aural approximation of "lol."
Enough about Will's article already. ps, I thought, until 22 seconds ago, that lol meant lots of laughs too. Well, I insist that that's what it means when I use it from here on out. Heritage not hate.
