Unfortunate, but true. They won't be picking up his option and our cap space will undoubtedly be going elsewhere over the summer.

    This.

I agree these types of players are undervalued and that their development is unpredictable but I just don't think they're very rare. I do think it's rare that a player starts his career as a great 3 and D guy. Most either start out as good defenders that extend their range or shooters that become savvy defenders. That's why it usually takes them so long to stick on a team. Francisco Garcia wasn't always this player and he will struggle to keep when he gets older.

Exactly. Once we get a veteran 4, Chandler will be able to become a more all round player, who can explode at any times as well.

Yes. Chandler is the prototypical small forward. Great man to man defense, has an offensive game but can't be overly depended on. He'd be great as a 3rd option guy.

I've been saying it - good role players (the ones who can play D & hit the open shot) are not a dime a dozen. They're undervalued. We got rid of one in Patrick Patterson, and now we're going to lose another in Francisco Garcia. Not real pleased about that.

So I understand picking up the team option is unlikely but can't we decline the option and sign him to a new deal?

Dont think garcia will be too happy to have been declined more money, just to sign to the same team for less money for a roster spot that won't be guaranteed

Fransico Garcia reminds me of Shane Battier. Tough defense and clutch shooting. I played with both of them. Shane is a better post player>>

There has to be a few of these players on the FA market who would agree to a vet minimum type deal.

Maybe after getting our second star this summer via free agency we could sign Garcia for the stretch exception ($2.5 million) plus a second year player option?

I don't see why Garcia wouldn't want to stay here.. the Rockets are gonna offer him his fair market value. The same as every other team.

We're contenders, perfect situation for him. I bet he likes the city too

Terrence Ross of the Raptors have the attributes to become one of the New-Age Shane Battiers.

I LOVE the point of this article, but I'm not sure about its list - where is Thabo Sefolosha??? Great defender at the 2-3 positions AND shoots better than 40% at three. How the heck do you leave him off?? He's the best out of all of them.

Two guys mentioned in the article -- Jeff Taylor and Jae Crowder -- would be very nice players to have if Howard and/or Paul were to came here. I can't see the Mavs trading Crowder to the Rockets of all teams (not for fair value, anyway), so Taylor may be the more likely trade candidate. Maybe something along the lines of Jones & White for Taylor and a future 2nd.

Obviously the Rockets could add cheap 3&D players through the draft as well, though we know the Rockets usully go BPA.

Either way, adding at least one such quality player will be key, because it'd allow you to play small with Parsons at either SF or PF for stretches, which should be quite valuable even if any of the current PFs on the roster turn out to be ready to contribute quality minutes next year -- which I, for one, believe D-Mo is most capable of doing.
Jones has an outside chance to be that guy as well, I guess, but if it were to come down to one guy, I think D-Mo is the likeliest PF to be kept. Cheapest. Highest potential. Intriguing skill-set. Fits well next to Harden. Howard and Paul, too, of course. :)
