It makes intuitive sense. But studies have been done to see if streakiness in basketball, as far as shooting, is a real phenomenon that can be statistically differentiated from a normal random distribution. You can google the topic to read more on it.

That sounds very Harden/Rox offense-like. Maybe there is a reason the team runs it so much even though it causes dismay in many on CF (including me).

This is incredibly awesome. I also wonder why Toronto would reveal this stuff.

Someone needs to photoshop Lebron James on the Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol movie poster.

Perhaps. Perhaps it is much more of a revelation for us than it is for guys in the industry. Seeing the output here doesn't get competitors very far in figuring out all the algorithms needed to make the ghosts plays defense properly, which is where the most value is. Maybe Toronto wanted to show off a bit because they don't have a very good reputation and this is a subtle way of showing free agents and customers that they're cutting edge.

Considering the complexity of the model we've seen, I'm guessing they did, in fact, account for that.

Remember, this is more of a player development tool and a strategizing tool, not an in-game decision-making tool. Players need to make reads on the court and act appropriately. But, doing so with information on what is generally optimal can only help. And it should be especially helpful for a coach who is trying to draw out the structure of his offensive and defensive sets.

Anybody that has played the game of basketball can tell you a "hot hand" is something that is real. It actually even makes sense. Sometimes a player is just focused more and he feels shooting is easier than usual. Sure the occurrence is random, but when it is triggered the likelihood of his shot going in is higher.

See these are the types of things that statistics and or number crunching has no way of explaining. This is why you use stats and numbers for certain questions and or items, but you cannot use it to explain everything such as a player in the zone.

Gamblers often say they were "in a zone" as well. The human brain can be funny like that.

I do think "hot hand" can be real in some cases, because of confidence or getting into a shooting rhythm. But people often overstate this effect. You can be a confident player and be in a shooting rhythm and still miss shots.

If a guy hits 4 shots in a row in a given quarter, an announcer will inevitably say "that player is hot". Its not necessarily the case.

I say a "hot hand" is relatively real. Simply for the fact that its acknowledged that players can be a COLD HAND and lose confidence.

This is the thing I'm seeing more in just general life .... when you do something right, its almost like a happy accident. But then you're entirely accountable on the hook FOR RUINING things. So people can have 100% influence in ruining something, but only 20% influence in doing something right.

Itd seem unfair that you can safely dump on someone's bad performance but not feel good in the good. No one's gonna give the ball to a sucky scared shooter. But a player thats made 3 straight and seems "in the zone", you're gonna TRUST that player more. *So its about measuring if the over-confident player is full of crap , don't give them TOO much free reign*
