Well, tell me his stats first before I make the comment. I do not follow the baseball at all.

It depends where you go to school. Rice (and Vandy, I assume) will count the A- as a 3.7. In others, like UT, the minus doesn't mean anything and any A is a 4.

One thing that really helped me: when trying to transfer or get into grad school, see how the new school recalculates your GPA. I found out that UT, since they don't use pluses and minuses, didn't want to hear about them from your other school. That they were just going to call every A an A, every B a B, regardless. That helped me so much... I went from having a 2.95 (at Rice) to a 3.15 just with that calculation alone. So my grades didn't stop me from getting into grad school.

WHAT's an A? I thought the grading scale was from
    W(withdrawal) - to F (flags) - to D (Dude?) - to C (cool) - to B (Boo-ya!) ???? :(

At our school the grades are also straight A -4 B-3,... The reason is the grades have to be entered by hand. and entering the +/- would double the data entry and grades would not be able to be completed in one day. Talk about low tech, but we are starting to completely ungrade the whole system.

Isabel.. no kidding.. I haven't done the calculation, but I think going to the "normal scale" would help me a lot too..

Especially with the tendency of profs to give a lot of A minuses.. whereas if it was straight A or B they'd give you the A because you don't deserve to be down to a B.. but with the A minus.. you end up getting a lot of A minuses instead of A's

That and the simple fact that.. I could have a 3.7 gpa without ever making anything below a 90.. or I could have a 2.7 gpa without ever making anything below an 80.. it's possible to have a 2.7 gpa.. all B minuses without ever making a c for instance.. but im glad to hear you say that grad schools take into account the grading scale

Was gonna post my own thread in a few days so I could have all the glory to myself, but I'll put it in here instead :D

Two more finals to go, and I will have a BA in English with a minor in Business/emphasis on marketing.

    Took 5 years total.

    :)

isabel. thanks for the tip.. after doing some calculations. it helps me quite a bit when i use the scale most schools use..

i really just dislike it because I think it adds a lot of stress.. especially at finals time because there is no safe grade.. with plus and minus system .. it is always possible for your grade to move up or down based on final
