i give him an A. the only trade i did not like was the bonzi/bobby+MJ trade, but he did get rid of MJ's contract
I give him an A+ He took a team saddled with some bad long term contracts, churned most of those out, while upgrading one of the most important needs on the team in PF. Sure he took a couple of swings at the problematic PG position that didn't work out in James and Francis, but the fact that he is willing to gamble and take some chances is refreshing to see. Also, he pried Scola away for a discontented V-Span, and was willing to take on the poisen pill of Butler's contract (for another year I think)....that also shows me he is in it to win....now. So, one more off season coming up and I look forward to what the wizard can do. This team is not very far away when healthy from competing AS IS...so give us a couple more pieces surrounding Yao and TMac...and lace em up again. DD
And no Bobby Jackson. Imagine Aaron Brooks starting at the point, being backed up by...Luther Head? Bobby Jackson and Bonzi Wells get the same results, they just go about it different ways. And even if Bonzi did make the difference against Utah, we weren't going any farther, and Bonzi is a free agent.
You have to give Morey an A+. Here are the reasons: - The drafting and signing that you had all talked about (Landry, AB, Scola) - The trading away of contract burdens from Carrol Dawson era (CD is a great man, but he often screwed up as a GM): first Juwan Howard's contract, then Mike James' contract, and most importantly, not getting trapped into a new one via some bad trades, as CD used to do - Gaining some flexibility with getting trade exception back, and still managing to keep the MLE open And this was his first year, with heavy burden from his predecessor. Imagine what he can do in his 2nd year and beyond.
Taking on Juwan was a cost of trading for T-Mac. Morey traded for Mike James. It was his first trade as GM. Jackie Butler and Justin Reed are still on the books for next season.
A C+? Seriously? Plus you forgot the Scola trade. He deserves an A no doubt. He is a rookie GM and did a great job. I'm anxious to see what he does this offseason.
an A- he yet again failed to address our 2 biggest issues, a PG, and a backup for TMAC...well i guess not the 2nd no1 expected luther to be this useless
He brought me Landry. What more can I say? I'm in love with the guy (Landry). He also got a steal with Scola and got rid of unreliable Bonzi. He's awesome. A
Some people are seriously overrating what a GM can do with the following. 1. Near luxury tax threashold for an owner not willing to pay it. 2. 25th pick in the draft 3. About 5 mil worth of expiring contracts, of which 3 mil he could not use freely because cutting Sura would save money. 4. No young prospects. I have not seen Morey's "big moves" yet - hopefully that changes this offseason - but he has squeezed A LOT out of basically nothing.
I'd say A+. The main reason is, BJax is a good player! He just sucked in the 'offs. He got rid of James' contract, which frees up a LOT of money to sign someone good! Again, as many of you have said, he is a ROOKIE GM. They will make mistakes, obviously. This money-crunching, numbers-loving GM will be here to stay for some time.
Agreed, we don't need another undersized PG, look at how did laker do to DM, he was blocked left and right whenever he tried to attack the rim.
B+, definitely a move up from CD, who I thought was an excellent coach and one of the league's worst GM's. Morey should get a few years before the serious grading begins, but a decent start. However, this team needs sooooo much more athleticism and size to "really" be a contender.
I hear you on that, but something I've thought about; honestly what could bobby do that mike james couldn't? You telling me mike james couldn't go out there and go 1-10 and jack fade away jumpers and pull 3's? Only advantage bobby has over james is he knows the system, they're both streaky, and both kill you more often then they help. But yeah he probably wouldn't of played and we would of had brooks backing up rafer, but hey that would of just been more experience for brooks.
B Good move on Scola and Landry but I'd rather see them get traded away for a real PF(6'10'', 250, 15/10/5). Good move on SF3 but it's more like SF3 wanted to come back. Bad pick on AB, he might be good for other teams but not for Roc Bad move on trading for Mike James, really bad Not sure about BJ move, depends on what can we get from his expiring contract.
Morey is the Wizard, remember? He gets an A+. Even considering the Mike James and Bobby Jackson trades, I still give him that grade. The job of a GM is to get players here, not develop and find the player playing time. At the time of the trades, those moves looked smart and good. Mike James trade: We traded away Juwan Howard, who was gonna do nothing for us anyway this year. We got rid of Howard's huge contract for a player who could help us at a position that was weak for us, and also the fact that he's played with Yao and Tracy before was a plus. Morey can't control Alston and Brooks beating out Mike for the point guard rotation, or control Mike's sudden terrible shooting after getting off to a good start. At least, Morey brought talent in; too bad that this talent didn't work out. Bobby Jackson trade: We're blaming Bobby for not playing well in the playoffs, but in reality the root of this problem was Rafer's injury during games 1 and 2, which forced Bobby to overplay his role. Morey can't control Rafer coming down with an injury. At the time of the trade, Bobby was a solid veteran who can BACKUP Rafer in the playoffs, and alternative to having the rookie Brooks take that role. The Rafer-Bobby combo would've worked if Rafer stayed healthy. Yes, it's true that Bonzi is a better player than Bobby, but Bonzi was pretty much a one year rental. There's two pluses to this trade now: we got rid of the Mike James' huge contract, and now we can use Jackson's expiring contract to our advantage this offseason. Steve Francis signing: Again, Morey can't control someone coming down with an injury. At least this move was a low risk move, and actually could still be a high reward move. We'll just have to see next year if Steve bounces back. Landry, splash. Scola, splash, Brooks, splash. Harris, semi-splash. Adelman, splash. A+
