GOP Voted To Raise Debt Ceiling 3 Times with No Preconditions During The Trump Presidency During former U.S. President Donald Trump's presidency, Congress raised the debt limit with bipartisan support and no budget-cut preconditions on three occasions — in 2017, 2018, and 2019 . headline from 2017 Mitch McConnell: ‘Zero chance’ US fails to raise the debt ceiling, after Trump's Secretary of Treasury, Mnuchin, had called for Congress to pass a bill to increase the borrowing limit by the end of September. By then, the Treasury will have exhausted its so-called extraordinary measures to continue its borrowing authority and risks defaulting on its debt.
How are you so sure? You do understand that Kevin is held hostage by the minority voice in his party that can vote to remove him at any time. Wasn't that the terms McCarthy agreed to in order to get the votes he needed? It appears to me that it will be a debate for his side of the coin.
Define entitlements....because I know you aren't talking about social security and medicare as those are paid for by people of this country over their entire career. So, what entitlements exactly? Military spending? DD
Negotiate over what? To pay our already accumulated bills? That is it. Bottom line. You have budget negotiations when it is time to finalize the budget. This is not that time.
I put it at a 30% that it requires extraordinary action (the Biden admin ignore Congress inaction) to pay our bills, and at a 1-2% that we default for the first time in our history. We are that crazy.
Why do you keep saying, "we." We have a radical republican problem in this country. They're holding the nation hostage to push their Christian state on us all.
Right. The only debate is within the Republican party about whether they want to literally blow up the GLOBAL economy just to prove a point or whether they want to JUST hold the GLOBAL economy hostage like terrorists in order to extract something that normally you'd have to win the White House, Senate, House, and have a majority on the Supreme Court to achieve legislatively. Kevin McCarthy is on the hold hostage to extract something side, but let's not act like ANY of them are looking to do the right thing here, and have positive intentions. However it's the arsonists that really control the GOP at the moment. It's like Alfred said in The Dark Knight... "Some men (or women in this case) just want to watch the world burn." I personally think that Biden is just going to have to lean on the Constitutional argument, and order the treasury to pay the debts, and order the debt ceiling raised via executive order. Let the Supreme Court step in and try to stop him. The Constitution is clear that "The Debt Shall Not Be Questioned." Let SCOTUS be the ones to say that no the President cannot save the country and the global economy because of anti-American arsonists that just so happened to get elected in gerrymandered back country districts.
I am talking about Medicare and SSN which is responsible for a large chunk of our spending. You do see what’s happening in France right now and they don’t have military spending like we have. It’s just a fact that aging populations are taking an outsized chunk of government budgets and it’s only increasing.
Absolutely. But I don't think this is a radical component of the Republican party. This IS the mainstream Republican position - to hold the debt limit hostage whenever the POTUS is a Democrat. The radical component is the willingness to default. It's still we though. We, as a whole, allowed this possibility.
You get more benefits than you paid in, yes? I want SSN and Medicare to absolutely continue to exist but this isn’t a sustainable path.
.... you know we can raise taxes right to help make the programs more solvent right???? The 2 trillion trump tax scam and the Bush tax scams are good starts
I get more than I paid in due to interest on that money. Look at it as me loaning the government money, not the government giving me money.
It’s more than just interest. We aren’t on a sustainable path with Medicare and SSN as our population rapidly ages and life expectancy increases over time.
Are you even aware that the rich don't even pay social security on income above 160k? Do you have any idea how much money we're leaving behind by not taxing all gross income ? Youre just posting right wing ideas. The money is there to fix the system. It's called taxes
Lol… I just said it wasn’t on a sustainable path and posted zero ideas…. Im sure increasing taxes are a simple solution in this environment.
Plus, rapidly rising healthcare costs (a single payer would do wonder here). Revenue sources (payroll taxes) have not kept pace ---> baby boomer retiring and ratio of workers to beneficiaries declines. There are plenty of potential new revenue sources and not everyone needs to dip into Medicare and SS -> "pass" it on to the next gen or to their offspring until someone actually needs it
Are you even aware SS is a retirement account, not a social fund? The reason its not taxed after a certain amount is because the government caps payments.
