there's a free site called www.utlife.com that is essentially the same thing, just specific to UT. i didn't know about it until my last year but it seemed pretty good and just like pick-a-prof. also, for all you lazy people, i'm sitting at home on the bbs taking in scholarship checks AND getting paid for research that hasn't even started yet. i'm not working for them yet, but the paychecks have come for the last 2 months. it's very nice. but eventually that will change. oh, and i took business foundations which is just 6 business classes to basically get a business minor (i was ChE) and even though all the classes were 320 classes (UT ranges from 00 to 99 so 20 is pretty low) they were so damn easy. all us engineers envied the business students so much. never had to show up, barely had to study, little to no hw, and all multiple choice tests. i didn't even show up to the finance class except on test days and got an A. engineering can be tough, but just get some friends to do all your hw with, or copy it from, and you should be fine. the minutia-filled bs hw assignments that are nothing like the idealized, simplified tests are what take so much time. test questions may be harder, but on the homework they always make you do the method that's extremely specific and takes forever. but like i said, just copy it from someone else and it's all good.
Yeah I'm gettin rammed from that already... I have three basic sequences courses left, 313, 319k, 322c, and I HAVE to take them all next semester (stuck taking Lipovski for 319 AND having to take two programming classes in a semester) and then take two upper division, 438 and 155 seminar or something... but as far as I know there's nothing I can do about it... blah...
Yeah even A&M wouldn't accept me coming from an out-of-state high school... But I went to UH for a year, got all A's, one B and one C (grr... history), got in-state status, applied as a CS major and got accepted no problem (they even let me transfer into EE before the semester started!). So there's hope for everyone, if there's any out-of-staters out there.
Drop two them on the beginning of year, apply for some sort of hard ship and take some B.S. class to get your 14 hours (friends that have done this took swimming, judo, study hall etc). It's not that bad to take an extra semester, not to mention another summer for a possible internship opportunity.
yea next semester im taking 313 316 and 322c cause i dont want to take lipvoski for 319 ALthough either scenario seems pretty tough
how so? where should i look for scholarships for my major or anywhere? your help is greatly appreciated.. thanks
Man I hated BA 101H, but I guess its like the easiest A you will ever get in college, so there is some benefit. MAN 336H is a blast. Only a couple tests and a group project. He mostly lectures the whole time, but keeps it interesting. You dont even really have to do the reading unless he tells you it will be on the test. The grade distribution is like 97% A's. Make sure you get Dierking, though. I don't know about the other prof. Dierking is my favorite prof at UT easily. It's the only class I have never been late to this year. And that's a big compliment coming from me.
well, right now i'm in grad school and they gave me those scholarships basically just to get me to pick petroleum engineering and because i had a great undergrad GPA (and probably a little because i'm white and they struggle to get us into petroleum apparently). and the research money is just extra money for doing a job but really i'm just reading right now to get ready for the real job. but hey, the paychecks already started so that's good. as for my undergrad scholarships. one was the National Merit Scholarship. either you get a high enough SAT (or was it PSAT) score to get it or you don't. and then UT gives you money if you get the award. another was the Jones Scholarship. that went to 5 people in our graduating class at our high school each year. i assume it happens at a lot of high schools but can't be sure. you'll have to ask the guidance counselor or whoever handles college stuff for an application. another was an award for doing well in UIL competitions. forget how i applied for that. i'm not even sure, are you already in college? in which case, i'm not sure how much of this even applies once out of high school then i got some byrd scholarship for i'm not sure what. and then finally i got a scholarship from the engr college, which i think was just from filling out something on the regular UT application so presumably you either did that or didn't. as for scholarships once you're in college i can't really help you there b/c i never bothered to go for anymore. that would've just been greedy.
Speaking of which, has anyone here ever taking the Karate at UT? I was seriously considering it, I loved it as a kid and seems like it would be fun to get back into...
Just do it, any time you can fit non - engineering class into your schedule, just do it. I was so mad at my self for not remembering the registration day and was unable to sign up for ball room dancing .... errr...... hand to hand combat to the death
Heh, I actually kinda liked 316, my mind works well with logic problems. Also ended up taking the VHDL follow up course for one of my electives, 360M or something, I forget now. Man, from hearing you youngin's talk, sounds like all the course numbers have changed. But I do remember that the name Lipovski was one to avoid. Oh, and someone is complaining about BA101? Puhleeze. (oh, and yes, count me in the group of engineering people who looked down at and somewhat jealously at the business majors ) I also ended up taking a few PED classes for fun. Ended up with Fencing, Archery, and Tae Kwon Do. All were very enjoyable.
Oh, I'm not sure if he's still teaching, but if you have a chance to sign up for any of the Honors Math courses like Calculus, Diff EQ, etc., look for Professor Guy. Definitely one of the coolest professors I had. Might not get an A, but shouldn't get lower than a B. If you aren't able to register because it's an Honors class, go to his class on the first day and ask nicely to be let in, and you have a good chance.
I got pretty much the same as you, scholarship wise. I received the Rodeo instead of the Jones (my school doesn't nominate anyone for both the Rodeo and the Jones). It's definitely a pretty nice package while at UT. National Merit is PSAT. General cutoff in Texas ranges from 214-216. The Byrd Scholarship is a combo of GPA and SAT. They have some formula- the easiest scholarship app. ever. It's primarily SAT distribution by state, from what I understand. They are SLOOOW with the money though- apparently the money for the fall semester won't come in until December. Yes, right around finals. qwerty- No kidding on the BA101H. The time slot makes it even worse. Good to hear once you get away from the BA101s and 102s the classes get better.
really? always once the 12th class day rolled around, they sent me an email with a form to download and print and send in (basically just my signature) and then when i got the money was just dependent on how lazy i was with sending in the form. although my last semester they did take an extra long time for some reason then only gave me half the money b/c i was registered for 9 hours since i was graduating. but i didn't feel like fighting for the money b/c i figured i wouldn't win.
do you register for your classes online or have to go to an advisor every semester? do they let you pick your professors? my orientation is on the jan8th.. and i guess thats when ill be registering.. hopefully they dont gimme all bad teachers
I think you have to see an advisor Freshmen year, but it's been so long since I've seen an advisor before signing up for classes. I did see her this year just to make sure I can graduate May and I'm not missing any classes out of carelessness.
