found an interesting nugget in a write-up from the 4 letter network:

it appears his perceived value is much lower than expected...

now while this piece is via a NYK blog, it was a collaboration with salary cap guru Larry Coon (to hash out the implications with the new CBA)
...and the perceived value is relative to Jeremy Lin and Steve Nash, his main competition at PG on the open market.

    thoughts?

If the Rockets could sign him for the MLE they would have a bargain.

    I agree.

the article section in question was discussing the likelihood of NYK re-signing Lin due to the new salary "apron" lowering their MLE to $3MM (vs. $5MM).
if NYK were to go over the $3MM to re-sign Lin they would be held to a hard cap for the rest of the season.

so there could be some wishful thinking involved by the author

Same thing I though at the beginning. The league has more talent PG's then ever before and it's just not a position that will command be money because of it.

Glad that Coon sees this as well. Won't be surprised if Morey get's Goran signed before Nash signs somewhere else.

Not acurate at all. All it takes is two parties to jump the bid. In Goran's case Portland has made it clear they want Goran, and aren't scared to spend a few bucks. For that fact alone, I would kiss the MLE dreams goodbye.

One of the best negotiation tactics Morey can present is to actually go hard after Nicholas Batum. The more you can get them to spend on Batum, the less they will want to get in over their head with Goran. Worse comes to worst, and they let Batum walk to Houston for a reasonable cost, and put all they have to outbid the Rockets for Dragic.

If the Rockets cant maintain Dragic, Batum would be a nice consulation prize if Portland lets him walk.

That being said, NYK and teams alike have nowhere near enough to come close on what Portland and Houston can offer. Thinking they can get him at that low amount is a pipe dream and its not above Knicks fans and their media to live with their heads in the clouds.

Another team to watch out for is Dallas, who mentions Goran alot in the media as a target if they cannot net Deron Williams. They will have "some" cash the burn, but Even Cuban himself has become much more economically aware since the new CBA came into action.

Short answer, no he will command much more. How much, I dont know. I would guess at least a Kyle Lowry type of contract if not closer to 10Mil a year for 3 years with a team option on the fourth year.

I think they are mistaken, whoever wrote it. Nash is already said to have been offered $10 mil/year from PHX. Dragic will also earn much more than $5 mil/year. $9 mil is more realistic for Dragic.

    Interesting.

    1. What is Batum worth?

    2. Can Batum play SG?

I was going to start a thread about going after Batum as a way to lock up Dragic, but I can't start threads, so....

That is the right way to go about it, IMO.

Batum played alot of SG with Portland this year, and Parsons IMO can play the SG position just fine.

In McHale's offense, there really isn't anything those two guys couldnt do in either/or position. Parsons is the better ball handler and facilitator, and Batum is probably better at spot up shooting.

I have no idea what Portland is planning on offering Batum but keep in mind that they only have a few contracts signed up for next season, Aldridge, and Crawford being the two decent sized contracts. They will need a whole heck of alot of players to sign in free agency unless they are planning on filling out their roster with their rookies, undrafted rookies, and D-Leaguers.

If both Batum and Dragic command around say 10 mil a season(which could very well happen), I would assume it would not be wise to lock up 20Mil a season on those two players alone. Lets be honest, those two guys aren't superstars.

Keep in mind that there are a couple quality PG's in their draft range that they might look at taking. If they are high on say... Kendal Marshall, they might very well look at drafting him as insurance if they have to choose between one or the other of Batum/Dragic.

Right now, they are going out playing the negotiating game of saying they will match any offer for Batum. I think thats a tactic to keep his price down.

If Morey can make a push for Batum and raise the price up significantly, It might force them to make the decision between the two. Worse, comes to Worst and you significantly cripple the salary cap of one of your West Coast rivals going forward.

I'd rather Have Batum than Dragic though. He fills a position of need.

Portland has a sufficient cap flexibility to both match a large Batum offer and sign Dragic to a large offer at the same time.

If they sign both those players for > $20 million good for them. I'd rather rebuild than sign starters for that kind of money.
