You are funny. These conversations happen just about everywhere. I have heard them in Chicago and Northern Ireland.

 

But never in Cali or NY or Ohio or Florida or....

 

LOL Maybe because I am a big middle aged white man that is a lawyer, wears a suit and boots...... but I people have no problem hiding their disdain for other people that they can marginalize in my line of work. I have heard district attorney's and judge's say horrendously sexist, racist, classist things.

I have heard probably the most negative things about women.... white, black, green doesn't matter.... that is the one consistent that ALL types of men in power seem to complain about.

I have heard it all.... and I have seen most judges try not to let it color their rulings, but of course it does......

Don't think it is any better any place else in the world though..... I thought that until I had business outside the USA in Europe and Asia..... and it is actually worse there. Watch what happens to a black man in China...... watch what happens to a woman in India..... watch what happens to anyone not from Russia, in Russia......... If I were black, Russia would be the last place I would go........ Russia is basically an unmitigated cesspool of unchecked hatred.

 

On a side note, Northern California is one of the creepiest places in the USA.... it is on par with anything you will find in Louisiana or Alabama.... or Montana........ in Northern California, they don't want you there...... and they make it clear. Just about every place I stopped I had someone grill me on why I was there and what I did for a living.

 

I don't get it locally, but when I'm elsewhere people will find out I'm from Texas, live on a ranch, that kind of stuff, and then some (*not all, at all*) somehow feel free to open up to me with all of their perceived issues and grievances, like I'm just naturally going to agree with them...it's ridiculously uncomfortable but I do let them talk for a bit (2 beer maximum) before excusing myself. Eye opening, to say the least.

Yep, there are many parts of the Pacific NWern states that are as sketchy as anywhere I've ever been in the USofA.

 

That's where the people who for whatever reasons that want to be off the grid go

 

I bet you do. Racists are everywhere, but the GOP is the party that makes white killers heros and bashes black killers any chance they get. Rittenhouse is a prime example. Greg Abbott's pardon another.

It's no coincidence that Nunes is in the rural area around Fresno. Crazy people but mountains are amazing.

 

People forget how big Northern California is and just think of the Bay Area. Attitudes in the north central valley and coastal areas north of Marin county are very different than in SF.

 

I was treated very well in Northern Ireland by both Unionist and Republicans but racism has become a big problem especially among poorer Protestant / Unionist communities. Some of the extreme unionist groups have embraced Neo Nazism and have aligned themselves with extremist Rightist movements. I saw Swastikas and White Power graffiti in Belfast in Protestant areas.

 

In Northern Ireland, the racism towards foreigners (which is what you and I would be considered) is typically less threatening. I over heard comments, and I witnesses some racism that was not intended to be racism by the Catholics. My wife is Middle Eastern, and there were some people that were unintentionally racist in the Catholic areas. I did not experience ANY myself, but that is honestly the norm.

However, when we were in the Protestant areas, I did see more racism. I had a drunk Irishman interrogate me about my wife and whether we should have children and I did witness a Protestant woman explode at a Pakistani teenager at a restaurant where he worked.

Most of the other stuff was more of a curiosity - I had several people at a party ask what it is like to live in a country with so many different ethnicities, and then they transitioned into how they cannot see living near black people.

As far as their being NAZI's there, they do exist - but mostly I saw a lot of tension between the Catholics and Protestants, you could tell whether one was Catholic or Protestant based on how they carried themselves.
