That's what you call a "gaffe". A gaffe is when a politician accidentally tells the truth.

i wish the republicans put as much effort into investigating the failures of 9/11 as they did benghazi.

    4 deaths vs. 3,000.

Amen to that if they would have put any effort into the answers were right in front of them.

I don't think they showed much of anything on Benghazi. I'm not even clear on what malfeasance they've settled on at this point. But the Benghazi deal is just one front on a much wider war. It contributes to robustness. Maybe a voter doesn't put much stock in the Benghazi whatever, but you stack that on top of the email business (which I actually am mad about) and the Clinton Foundation thing, and the White Water thing, and all the other stuff and people get tired with all the scandals (real or manufactured) and just cringe every time they hear Hillary's name. The GOP have put a whole lot of work into building a tapestry of scandal around her. And each thread might be weak individually, but taken altogether the robustness can be powerful to dissuade voters.

Anyway, people who like Clinton will probably seize on this quote and say, 'Aha, the smoking gun that this is all a witch hunt!' much the same way the GOP will say 'Benghazi!' We all know or should know it's a witch hunt. That it's a witch hunt says only a limited amount about the validity of the accusations anyway.

He's really just saying that if her incompetence was hidden better, no one would know about it. He's saying that they've tried to bring her incompetence to the surface and as a result, her numbers are dropping. Not really that much of a scandal.

The last time the Republicans sank Hillary, we ended up with Obama. Republicans never learn from their mistakes.

They cannot win on their own merits
so all they seem to try to do is trickery and deception
    and then win by default

Apparently it cost him the Speakership. He's now withdrawn from the race just before the election, throwing the House GOP into total chaos.

Just speculation on my part, but I dont think McCarthy had the votes. The Freedom Caucus alone has a veto since they can deny the Republicans a majority in the House. Add in a few more defections and McCarthy may have simply concluded that this was an unwinnable nomination. He'd have to pander in ridiculous ways to win over the crazy vote and he might have just concluded that it wasn't worth it.

He basically had two choices. Either draw out the process and turn this into a multi ballot election (which will make the Republicans look horrible) or basically give in and let the tea party run the show in order to win. So he made the smart move and said forget it.

Oh absolutely - I have no doubt about this. The Freedom Caucus has 40 members and they said (yesterday?) that they plan to vote as a group for Daniel Webster. McCarthy could have won today, but likely would have run into problems in a few weeks in the official vote.

The problem is that I'm not sure who the solution is, or if there is one. Anyone that's not crazy is going to run afoul of the Freedom Caucus. And anyone crazy enough for them can't win votes from the non-crazies.

There may have to be an unholy alliance with moderate Dems, or it would be interesting if they went outside the House and found a well respected non-member that could serve as Speaker.
