Stacey Abrams and her crew need to be working overtime to make sure people are informed of the voting changes and keep that turnout high.
Expect the GOP in Texas to follow suit. Maybe they can ban bathrooms within a mile of a voting booth also. Maybe someone will plan a voter fraud in the stalls.
I get the feeling that this law will be tested and we will see a lot of civil disobedience around it. Also again Justin Amash is no liberal or Democrat. He left the GOP out of conscience.
If it only applied to campaign employees, I’d have no issue with it. But it looks like this applies to other nonprofits too. Snacks aren’t changing anyone’s votes lol.
100%. Georgia is obviously tasked by the GOP as being a test case for Texas, and Florida. Georgia is important because it mirrors those two states in demographics well, and changes to the electorate. However they can run batsh$t crazy rules through the state legislature there first, test it out in the courts, and then provide more bullet proof tactics in other states. If they get complete control through a bad Dem down ballot election year in Michigan, Wisconsin, PA, etc. they want to be ready to act. It's a smaller, and less important state, so you test out the crazy stuff there first, and then refine for the more consequential states. This is about providing a rock solid approach for the GOP to secure an autocratic minority rule moving forward with the United States. Thats why the most important thing that the GOP planned to do, and moved mountains to do over the last decade is stack the courts so they would have the best chance at providing legal cover for their next act... which is rigging the election system of the US to ensure minority rule, and re-writing our Republic for generations. Joe Manchin, and Krysten Sinema are the only two people who stand in the way of literally saving our democracy by stopping this power grab destruction of our Democracy in its tracks.... and they only have a couple of months to change completely which is a scary thought for where we are.
The scariest part is how openly brazen they have become. They don't even need to hide their supression intentions to convince the white conservative voting bloc. Expect more riots and violence as time moves forward as more citizens have more obstacles in their way to have their voice represented. This country is going down the toilet. All the gun rights advocates and Libertarian "intellectuals" who wax lyrical about basic rights like free speech suddenly are quite about the basic rights to representation. Where is the Reason and Federalist article for this @Os Trigonum? I know it isn't as pressing as a private company deciding not to sell 5 Dr. Seuss books but there has to be some criticism from the "free speech" crowd?
...the thing to remember about what's happening in Georgia is not the sensational, headline-driving aspects of this law... ...it is the leveraging of partisan determination of what is and is not a "fair" election (i.e., when an election result does not favor a Republican, it will be upended and even overturned)... ...in a way, the remnants of the Donald's insane, yet dedicated, attempt to overturn the election has codified, now, the desire to discard votes that the Republicans decide are not valid. The sad and sobering truth is that none of this is new. And again, this is only the beginning...across the nation, the Republicans will attempt to do what is happening in Georgia nationwide. ...and just to be clear about something: ....nothing about this has anything to do with race...until it has EVERYTHING to do with race...
It's a circular logic narrative also. The GOP's excuse for all this isn't evidence based but rather "Americans have concerns about the integrity of our voting process and we must address it". Mother ****er! Trump and the GOP spammed false allegations about fraud that made these people "have concerns about the integrity of our voting process". It's a joke.
These relatively ordinary GOP folks who support this blatant out in the open attack on voting rights and there bye democracy. Their belief in democracy is tenuous. They have been very effectively progandized by that small group at the top who are fascists, like the large industrialists who supported Hitler.
They don't hide it because they understand that their voters at their core are afraid more than ever (and polling data confirms this) of a changing culture where they lose their privileges and their class status. That's why you see some Hispanics also having an anti-immigration slant that pulls them to the GOP. It's not just about race as it is about class. The GOP are actually pretty open about this because it's a selling feature to their base. They are selling them as a party that will ensure them that they will secure their status & class via stopping the liberalization of America by rigging Democracy in their favor. People like my parents 100% are okay with this. Sure they haven't yet gotten comfortable with saying they support autocracy yet, but they all do. It's what they believe is necessary to secure the America they are nostalgic for that never really existed in the way they remember it. So it's no shock that they would advertise this move. I also 100% believe soon you are going to more and more comfort with openly selling that Democracy actually is bad. The further and further we are removed from WW2 with the imagery of autocracy that it provided, the easier it gets for the GOP to sell their vision of America that secures minority rule & sells an autocratic leader like Trump or whoever is coming next. This is coming.... or it's already here to some extent. The Democrats must pass HR1, and do much much more like making DC and PR states now.
