Although very premature, in Texas Pete Olson of Sugar Land is looking good. Also, there is George P. lurking in the Bushes, but the Bush name has lost its sheen (except for Jeb in Florida). On the national scene, I still like Huckabee and Jindal, but they can no longer be considered "rising" stars, but there are some new governors and senators who are elbowing their way into the GOP limelight.

I like that. Major, Deckard, Madmax and some others are so blinded by the need to be "moderate" that they let this bias interfere with their fact finding and logical analysis. :)

Thanks. I like Huckabee's persona, but feel he's a lightweight with no substance and in over his head. I think he would get exposed in a bigger campaign.

Jindal is not ready for prime time as his last prime time speech showed.

I think we can all put a fork in the Bush chances.

Seems like Pete Olson been around for a while but I may be confusing him with someone else. Is that Delay's old seat?

Yep, seems like we're both always beating the Bushes for one political reason or another. :D

I keep trying to talk my stepfather into running for that seat. He would beat Olson like a drum in the GOP primary.

    Wow...

I'm amazed that 17% of independents trust Republicans.

He was on the radio show I produce last week, and everything he said was nauseatingly canned and dry...even for a politician. Seemed gag-worthy to me...but then again, all these family values Republicans have the exact same stances on every issue, whether they truly believe them or not. Kind of goes with the hate-everything-Obama-does line of thinking. My point is, he doesn't seem any more special or charismatic than the typical congressman.

I think it's going to take someone who ISN'T completely socially ultraChristianconservative to change the GOP.

I haven't had too much time to research and most of the searchs regarding things like "Republican Majority" only refer to recent articles from the last few years. That said I will stand by that during the mid-90's after the Republicans took over Congress in 1995 and also after the 2004 elections there was a lot of discussion on such news sources as NPR, This Week, Meet the Press and others about Democrats being a party in decline.

Anyway even leaving aside an argument about the Democrats being doomed consider that the Republican Party has been considered doomed before in 1964 and 1992 when in both cases huge Democractic majorities took over the Fed and also many State Houses. In both those case the Republican party came back to national prominence.

Also looking at the current situation as the debate over healthcare shows the Democrats are far from united and intraparty squabbles could greatly weaken the Democrats from becoming a permanent majority.

Yes, but. Rasmussen has a rep as being very favorable to the GOP.

Just because you don't understand how to determine the value of a pol doesn't mean they are useless. In fact, they are quite useful, if you know how to account for systemic biases and properly interpret them. For example, Rasmussen polls have consistently leaned Republican in their samples for whatever reason. Remember, you can actually judge pollsters when they cover elections because we end up with the true election results.

That's true in a lot of ways. I don't know many people who would call themselves "Republicans" but still hold conservative values. The term "Republican" has developed a terrible connotation because of the whole Bush administration.

The GOP is in worse shape than they think. Their base which has long been older white Christian males is shrinking.

The Dems have all of the groups that are growing. This includes the higher educated, women, minorities, non Christians, and young voters.

The GOP has NO chance without completely turning around their message.

Their policies do not and have not worked.

Deregulation? That was a great idea wasn't it Phil Gramm? Who needs Glass Stegal companies need free reign to destroy themselves and take the economy down with them.

Trickle down theory and tax breaks for the rich? Another brilliant idea, Reagan turned this country from the largest creditor to the largest debtor all while creating less jobs than Carter. Bush the lessor followed the same idiot ideaology and got the same result: tons of debt, no job creation and the worst economic crisis since 1929.

How about privatizing SS? Don't you wish all of those seniors would have had their money in the market when it crashed last year? Do you realize how many people live off of SS alone? All would have been destitute and would have dragged this country down with them as they created a new poverty class.

Couple the GOP's failed policies with their antiquated and hypocritical ideas about legislating lifestyles (abortion, gay marriage, etc.) and you have a recipe for a party to slowly fade away into irrelevance.

Check out this article for a better synopsis on why the GOP is failing:

It's amazing how quickly privatization of SS fell off the radar for Republicans. Years and years of posturing on the subject, poof... all gone.

It's scary to think how much worse off we would be right now if that nutty idea had been implemented. But hopefully that notion is dead and buried for at least another generation.

Interesting sea change compared to mid-'90s onward, but the public is pretty fickle. Just compare a Johnson-Goldwater electoral map to Nixon-McGovern, or contrast Carter's two elections. I still think a quick sustained recovery or long multi-year recession could make indie voters prefer tax cuts over stimulus spending, add an unexpected or somehow mishandled terrorist attack and Republicans might have some kind of political foothold.
