ya, so essentially turn off messages being directly sent to my phone through the google number, but turn on the SMS forwarding so that texts sent to my google number are sent to my e-mail. sound right?
I'm curious too. I've only been using Blackbery messenger, but I just now disabled SMS via GV, and activated SMS to be sent to my email. So essentially, I send SMS FREE through GV? Then when they respond it goes to my email instead of a normal sms, so I don't get charged correct?
As long as you text using your Google Voice number and they text you back on the same number, texts are free. You don't have to forward them to your e-mail. You can access and send texts either through the web (including from mobile phones) or from GV apps on your phone. (Android, BlackBerry)
see this is where i'm confused lol. i have read varying things. i thought google voice only sent them for free using the google voice number. but if you got a text back, as long as it was sent to your phones SMS, you were still charged. hence people saying disable receiving texts, and forward them to your e-mail, that way you're only using data and not SMS.
Really? I thought the forwarding was free. As in someone sends you a text to your GV number, it is free. But if you reply with a text back from your cell, you would be charged for a text from your carrier. Eh, don't care anyway. Unlimited texts FTW.
If you text someone using your GV number, it's free. When they text someone back using your GV number, it's free. To access the texts they sent you you can either go to the website (there's a mobile one, too) or use an app on your phone (Android, Blackberry). You can also tell GV to forward your texts to your e-mail.
actually, i dont mean to keep harping. but see i just found this on the google voice help site in response to someones question: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/voice/thread?tid=76c891182b765fe2&hl=en Just be sure that in Google Voice you disable the "Receive SMS on this phone" option for your cell phone number, or any incoming text messages to your Google Voice number will result in a text message to your phone (and any associated text messaging fees for incoming texts). I have that option disabled, but have the SMS Forwarding (to email) enabled so that I receive an email notification whenever a Google Voice text message is received.
If someone texts you to your google voice number, it is free. If you text them back through your phone's default text messaging system, it will cost you. For replies to be free you would have to: 1) use the google voice web interface, 2) use the google voice app (only on supported phones), or 3) reply back to the SMS email you received if you have your google voice texts forwarded to your email (your reply email is seamlessly converted to a standard text message). I hope that clears it up for you. I have been using google voice exclusively on my new cell phone for a month now, so I feel pretty comfortable with it if you have any other questions.
haha yea, i think i got it. i guess the e-mail forwarding thing is for people that want instant notification of texts sent? because the voice apps can take awhile to notify you that you have a text? at least thats what i read on a site. something about the voice apps only refreshing every 5 minutes so you cant get an instant notification of a new text.
That's correct. The lowest refresh rate you can set for the voice app to fetch new messages is 5 minutes, whereas you can get them pushed straight to your phone immediately through email (which is why replying to the email and having it converted into a text is so useful). However, one of the Google developers has stated on their help forum that they are working on implementing push support for the voice app.
sounds good man. i gotta wait for the invite though, sent a request for one. hear it might take awhile.
Anyone got an invite they can spare? I'll be going to Trinidad soon and this service will come in handy. thelasik @ gmail Thanks!
does someone sending and invite to someone go quicker than just signing up through google? i just went to a page where i typed my e-mail in.
