Well things just got a little more interesting for iPhone users... http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/11c256da-7bc7-11de-9772-00144feabdc0.html
This is just stupid. I just got gv. Apple is such a controlling company. I got the iphone at the time because of the hardware, but I may need to get another phone.
So I got a Google Voice invite. I live in Austin, but there are currently no (512) numbers available. If you were going to "randomly" choose and area code for your Google Voice number, what would it be? What criteria would you use to make the choice? I'm torn...
I live in Houston. Maybe 210 would work best for you until 512 numbers are available. Otherwise, I would just wait.
Just wanted to chime in if there are still invites available. I know the hoopla nowadays is Google Wave, but I think this service is really good from what I read about it: flames.of.death@gmail.com FYI, if Google Wave invite links can be forwarded, I could trade that for one.
sorry to bump such an old thread. was thinking about trying this out, just wanted to get some opinions on people who have been using it. is it worth it?
Depends on how you are going to use it. It is a free service, so it is tough to say whether or not it is worth it without knowing how you are planning on using it.
<br> I usually use it to give my number out to people who I don't want to give my real number to. It helps that you can text as well.
Me too. I use it for that reason, and the personalized answering machine. (different things for my boss, etc....)
i guess i kind of worded it wrong. of course free is nice, hence i'm checking it out i have looked into a bit and get the general idea of what it does. the thing i'm getting caught confused about is the free text messaging. i know you can send free text messages, but can you receive them for free as well? if so, how? then again i'm reading that theres a blackberry google voice app i could download, maybe that just handles mostly everything. reason i ask, i'm reading people have all but eliminated their unlimited text plans, but again, not sure if receiving texts are gonna cost me something. i dont know if i'd need to necessarily need to take advantage of all the uses right now, but figured what the heck, its free, might as well give it a shot. could always setup numerous phones and advantages later on in the future.
You can receive text messages for "free" if you turn off SMS delivery I think. You can use the mobile web interface, or email. The thing about Google voice is that it gives you all these extra options that you didn't have with your conventional phone service. Visual voicemail, for starters, with an option to deliver by either SMS or email or both. Now that Sprint no longer charges for automatic call forwarding, I have my voicemail from my conventional Sprint # routed to Google voice so I have one awesome inbox for everything. Amazing call filtering (if you really don't want to ever hear from someone again, you can put them in the spam box that automatically plays a "this number has been disconnected" message for the caller. Sweet) You can control when you want to receive calls; if you need a short period of me time or you just don't want your phone to ring, just go on and put on privacy mode and your phone doesn't ring until you turn it off. Everybody gets sent to voicemail. You can schedule stuff. It's ... brilliant. The gDial Pro app for Palm Pre is pretty neat, and it does a great job of integrating the service with your phone, especially if you use the homebrew version with the patch that automatically redirects outgoing calls to GV.
Did Canada finally get Google voice? I have a friend who was upset it wasn't released when we both checked out the program. I call to Saudi Arabia all the time, by calling an 832 number.
I'm calling someone in Canada and I'm in the US. But Google makes it free. Whether I call Atlanta or Vancouver, it's all the same. I believe Canada is the only international place that Google makes free. What happens is you enter the Canadian number in Voice that you want to call. Then Voice calls you on your cell phone. After you pick up, it immediately transfers you to the number you wanted to call and you hear the ringing. These calls to Canada look like a received call from a US number on my bill. (Hopefully that made sense.) It's on a cell phone BTW, I don't have a land line.
i havent received my google voice invite yet. i assume by turning off the SMS delivery is an option in the GV options? so would i just turn on an option for like SMS forwarding to my e-mail, so i could read texts from that?
<br> I think the thing with the unlimited texts you have to make sure they aren't delivered to your cell line. Or else it costs money. You can text as long as it is sent to your internet mailbox.
