WSJ: Eric Schmidt calls China 'the most sophisticated and prolific' hacker of foreign firms

The Wall Street Journal snagged a preview of an upcoming book co-authored by Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt and the company's Jared Cohen, and it doesn't seem to paint the rosiest picture of China. Dubbed The New Digital Age, the tome reportedly claims China is "the world's most active and enthusiastic filterer of information" in addition to "the most sophisticated and prolific" hacker of foreign firms. Recent stats and events don't exactly help the nation's image.

The Schmidt and Cohen partnership has at least one other impressive credit to its name. The two wrote a long essay,“The Digital Disruption,” published in November 2010. In its opening paragraph, it predicted that “governments will be caught off-guard when large numbers of their citizens, armed with virtually nothing but cell phones, take part in mini-rebellions that challenge their authority.”

Co-author Jared Cohen is the head of Google Ideas, and has done some interesting things in the past with social media. He has extensive contacts with the State Department.

In the midst of the June 2009 post-election protests in Iran, Cohen sought to support the uprising by reaching out to Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, urging the company to reschedule its planned maintenance of the website so that Iranians could keep tweeting. His reasoning was that, given that many other forms of communication had been blocked or shut down, Twitter was one of the few ways for people inside of Iran to get information to the outside world. He also considered it an important way for people around the world to join the protests by disseminating proxy and circumvention tools.

Cohen was in Egypt during the January 25, 2011 revolution. He had dinner with the Egyptian activist Wael Ghonim the night before the revolution and was the last person to see him before his arrest. According to Ghonim, the Egyptian security forces interrogated him about his relationship with Cohen during his initial days of incarceration.
