Furthermore, if you're going to hold me to the strictest definition of censorship, read the other posts in this thread. Google's no more obligated to pimp all POV's than you are.
leakers are not whistleblowers, unless you want to extend the same honorarium to the plame "leaker", assuming such an animal exists. in any case, there are well documented methods of "blowing the whistle", that do not include going to the press. there are, for instance, laws. you seem to believe bush broke the law- in this case it's quite clear the leakers have done so. why do you not treat the two instances the same?
you are correct- doesn't mean i agree with it. google, in this case, is more akin to a utility. should power companies be free to deny gas and electricity to those with whom they disagree, asuming of course, the bills are being paid?
That's a particularly dodgy syllogism. Why would I not call the WH leaker a "whistleblower?" Because they weren't blowing a whistle. They were exacting political revenge against a guy who had blown the whistle on them. Even in your world, I seriously doubt you can posit an incident of wrongdoing by Plame for which a whistle might have been blown. My problem with prosecuting the CIA leaker is philosophical and it is not based in law. I admit that. And maybe she should be charged. I find it hard to believe she would be convicted by a jury for going outside of the CIA to blow the whistle on CIA wrongdoing, just as I would have a hard time believing a cop or a military serviceman would receive general contempt for going outside the police force or the military to expose wrongdoing within, but maybe she would. As for the reason I don't treat them the same, it's because they aren't. But as I said in the other thread, beating up on you bores me. That's why I do it so rarely these days. And I have to go run errands before I go to my final rehearsal in a couple hours. Speaking of which, the world premiere of SPEEDING MOTORCYCLE, the Daniel Johnston rock opera adapted and directed by me, previews tomorrow and opens Thursday. The preview and opening night are sold out, but you can still get tickets for the rest of the weekend. www.infernalbridegroom.com for info.
google (or actually google News) has a universal service obligation? News to me, I doubt many of the good folks at human events online , which I just linked too off of google news, would support such expansive government interference insofar as they've been instructed to parrot otherwise.
Three pages of posts, and not one that actually references one of the articles being referred to? Does anyone have any if these articles were really hate speech, or just conservative blogs? I suspect they were the former. I would hope Google would get rid of a site from the news service that's just a random hateful rant that contains no quality editorial content. I have no idea if any of the articles referenced fit that description or not, though.
my sense is they focused on the link between islamic fascism and terrorism. in aclimate where most major newspapers won't print cartoons depicting the prophet what's-his-name, it perhaps should not be surprising that google doesn't want to expose itself to retaliation. now it's all over, danny bailey, i guess the terrorists have won again.
It was over articles written by this woman. I am not making this up. http://www.arlenepeck.com/about.html Arlene Peck was born in Atlanta, Georgia and currently resides in Marina Del Rey, California. hmmm, so I can find hard core p*rn on google search, but not rightwingers jerkin it to bush's tax cut? Interesting...
if this were PBS (or if Google was getting subsidies), then I'd have a potential problem. As far as I know, they are privately funded and run. Google is not a public utility funded by taxpayers.
But what are you basing that on? Have you looked at the articles in question, or are you basing this on your NewsBusters article - a self-admitted biased source?
Editing the newsbusters article title ("is Google purging conservative news sites?") is a dead giveaway here.
By the way, here's some content from one of the sites referred to: <I> Jawa and Google News, Setting the Record Straight The Jawa Report was mentioned today in a World Net Daily column about censorship at Google News. In it, the author correctly identifies the fact that I received a letter from Google News which said, "Upon recent review, we've found that your site contains hate speech, and we will no longer be including it in Google News." The March 29th date he mentions, is also correct. But for clarities sake I just want readers to know that it was March 29th of 2005, not from this year. Also, to be fair to Google, after an appeal from readers The Jawa Report was reinstated as a Google News source. We are currently a Google News source. Go read the article at WND. There does seem to be a pattern at Google News of bias against right-of-center websites. But, at least in our case, there was a corrective mechanism. Somebody at Google--perhaps some one higher up the editorial chain of command-- did some further research after hearing complaints and decided that the initial 'hate-speech' accusations were unfounded. </I> In other news, the site posts a picture of some Iraqis with a caption contest to "Caption this photo of Islamofascists realizing that Rusty was there, and they failed to kill him." Quality journalism. http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/
Nicely summed up. It has been brought to basso's attention before, though. The two are not the same. The differences have been brought up. Just like he has been done this time, basso ignores the distinction. I have no problem with basso ignoring the distinction as long as long as he doesn't try and bring up the comparison again. Yet inevitably he does it over and over. Congratulations on the show. Once again I am sorry that I won't be able to be in Houston during the run. If you are ever in LA or have in of your work produced in LA please let me know, and I will do everything within my power to see it. [sidetrack from D&D material] Have you seen much theatre in LA? I am always looking for something. The broadway and off-broadway house size productions here are generally very good. They aren't as numerous as NY, but what is shown here, is often on par. There have been a couple things that have gone up in UCLA I would put in the same category. The smaller houses do sometimes have quality original productions. But even then the ulterior motive of discovery by someone in the business leaves it's unfortunate stench on most productions. The same was true of a lot of stuff in NY, but once you found a network it was possible to root out smaller theatre able to suit tastes. I was curious if you knew of any groups or even individuals to keep an eye out for that are involved in LA theatre that you could recommend. If so, feel free to shoot an e-mail via the board, or post something in hangout. If not then I will keep searching.[/sidetrack from D&D material]
Congrats! I did a reading of a new play last week. Read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in a vampire play! Possible run in the fall! And why don't you ask for resumes' biatch!
Won what? A catered dinner from basso? Is this a kerfluffle? A pancake? I'm not sure what your problem is with Google. Could we see something that was "censored?" If there is no "evidence," how could there be a crime? Isn't that the "standard" that you use? Keep D&D Civil.
who said anything about a crime? i said at the top of the thread, that i wasn't sure what to make of it, but that it troubled me. google is editing content for political purposes, something they manifestly have no problem with, see china, and that gives me pause. i would think it would you too.
