The goal of google fiber is to datamine your web habits so google can make money off of advertisements off of you. I don't care about that, but some people do
Everyone else already does this. Not unique to Google Fiber at all. Besides, Google Fiber subscribership will be a pittance compared number of people Google datamines using other means. Midixinormous post sums it up pretty good. I also believe Google will be able to freely experiment within Fiber without restriction and it will end up being a huge lab for them. IMO, Google wants internet connectivity to be as ubiquitous as the air we breathe. This is why they will eventually push Android aside and Chrome will emerge. There will be no point in downloading apps when web apps become just as good. Multiple versions of apps won't be necessary. Give it 5-10 years.

Just hours after Google announced that it was bringing its gigabit Google Fiber Internet and TV service to Austinites by mid 2014, AT&T said that it too will build a fast fiber-optic infrastructure for comparable high-speed access in the techie Texas city. As an expansion to the company's Project VIP, AT&T will deliver Internet speeds of up to 1Gbps through the just-announced Austin infrastructure, the company said. AT&T did not reveal pricing or its rollout plans, which makes the reveal seem like an in-your-face move designed to steal attention away from a competitor. Still, the announcement undoubtedly is a positive development for the people of Austin.[\B] http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57...google-with-gigabit-network-plans-for-austin/
This is the beginning of the end for cable/satellite At 1 GB/s, can easily stream whatever you want in HD. Everything will be a la carte (purchase the latest Game of Thrones episode for $0.99 on HBOGO, that sort of thing will eventually happen). The consumer will no longer be paying for things they don't watch.
Let me get this straight: Austin already has FiOS and will be getting Google Fiber along with a new gigabit service from AT&T while Houston has none of these. Where's da justice?
Damn. It won't even be worth it for me by time 2014 comes along because I'd be graduating soon. They need to come to HOUSTON.
