A la Sprint with their PCS?

Why Google would partner with Dish is strange enough.

The higher the spectrum, the lower the ability to go through walls and windows. Your phone wouldn't work well inside an office building.

Google hasn't shown that they can make money on anything other than ad revenue via search. All their other successful products haven't really been successful from a financial level. For example, android and nexus barely make any money. Google's MO is that they disrupt markets by offering a bunch of stuff for free subsidized by their search revenue. The problem with being a wireless carrier is that to be successful at it, you have to spend so much money that even Google's deep products couldn't subsidize a failing venture. AT&T spends over 10 Billion dollars a year upgrading their network to keep up with demand and customer's still complain. That is why Google will not buy Tmobile. First it would kill the margins that they report to Wall street. Secondly, it's a money hole that would prevent them from investing capital in other ventures and acquisitions.

With this dish experiment much like their broadband experiment, they are seeing if they can disrupt a very established business without losing their shirt in the process. What they will find is that in the short term they probably can not.
