Yes I am not sure how they even pass the health inspector. When they come to my place if it is even half a degree off they go nuts on me. Spinning around for who knows how long without cooling is ok though, apparently.
I've never been but I've heard VERY good things. They are only open for 4 days for a total of 22 hours each week; 6 hours on 3 days each and 4 hours on another day. Very strange hours for a restaurant.
I've never been to the Uchi here, but was at Uchi and Uchiko in Austin very often when I lived there. I agree they are on a completely different level from anything I've had in Houston. It's been a few years since I lived inside the loop, but my favorites were Kata Robata and Soma. They are run by the same owners. Went to Soma more just because I lived near it. Plus the atmosphere and happy hour is better than Kata.
Its like someone posted that they open the shop only part time mainly because it is run by a Japanese elder couple. The wife runs the front of the restaurant, cashier, orders and any cook kitchen orders while the husband makes the sushi. It is a very small place but I think it is worth the wait if you can make it out there. Miyagi is more of a traditional minimalistic type of sushi and not in the same creative/ unique category as Uchi or MF but still offer great quality sushi. If you go here it is better to order everything you want at one time because there could be a long wait for food.
Anybody been to Umaki- the sushi burrito joint? Seems like an interesting concept. Im guessing its like subway for a sushi burrito.
Best in the city.. you will wait a long time so plan an afternoon and eat up. I like the yellow tail and scallop sashimi. Old guy prepares it... wife is the waitress. Limited hours and staff... and you will wait.... but ******* is it my favorite. I don't share this place usually because I hate the wait but yall are cfs so why not.
Not the best sushi in town, but I tend to always take first dates to AKA sushi. They have a great HH menu, a nice enough romantic vibe, and reasonable prices. I typically get out of there spending about $90, which isn't too bad for a first date.
