Depends on what kind of "Chinese" you like. Kam's is NOT Chinese in the traditional sense. I, personally, hate it. RMTex's list is pretty good, although I have not been to all of those. Mine: Chinese - Fung's Kitchen Vietnamese - don't have a favorite anymore because all the ones I liked either changed ownership or just suck these days. I have been wanting to try a place at Bellaire & 8 (forget the name..I htink it is where Fu Kee used to be) but overall I am sad about Vietnamese right now. Indian - London Sizzler is good for UK-style. I always liked Ashoka but it closed. Sushi - Azuma or whatever else...don't really have a favorite these days Fish/Cajun - I guess Denis' Thai - Thai Seafood out on Nasa Rd 1 (I think) Ethiopian - Blue Nile, but not as good as Meskerem in Atlanta I once loved Americas but the last two times we have been the quality was not what it once was. We always debate whether we should give them another chance - it has been about two years.
La Fogata Restaurant 11630 SW Freeway @ Wilcrest ...for Colombian food. Located near Sugarland and Stafford. Been open for 22 years. Ask for Drizno also for good pho... I go to Pho Nguyen on Beechnut and Wilcrest. oh... Anybody heard of Lai Lai?
Yeah, that's what I was wondering. There was this badass place in Waco, which I can't remember the name, that was BYOB. A couple of buddies and I would take in a couple six packs of Peroni, a bottle of wine and chill. Even after leaving a nice tip since we took up the table for so long, our bill was typically $12-15 a person.
el charro in sam marcos hadreal good (and cheap) mexican food, and it was byob too.... great place. two other great spots in san marcos: the tap room - total no brainer, great burgers and a great beer selection thai thai - still my favorite thai place to this day
What was the place down by the 35 South frontage road across from some baseball fields? I remember everyone talking about that place when I got there. Never a big fan, but their migas were amazing. I think El Charro is the place where I had to **** nearly immediatly after eating there. That's not necessarily a bad thing.
Lai Lai Dumpling House was really good 25 years ago when it was the only thing on Bellaire Blvd. west of Gessner. Now, it just absolutely sucks. The dumpling skins they use are as thick as a phonebook, and they taste like a big pile of dough.
They did get Americanized(sp.) but damn... That Tso's is great. You got any recommendations for Asian food on The SW side of town, Tex?
They don't serve alcohol, and if I'm eating a bunch of very spicy Thai food, you bet I'm downing a few cold beers or white wine. Collina's lets you bring wine for like a $2 corkage, and there's a pretty good Italian place on Fountain View & San Felipe that does the same. Keeps you from getting killed on the wine markup.
hmm, had no idea. do they advertise byob? i guess i just don't eat out enough to think restaurants would allow this.
Chinese Cuisine. I know...the name is weird, but the food is fantastic. Chinese Cuisine on B-4-U-Eat.com This place is un-frikking-believable. Notice who did the first review.... It's non-Americanized, Northern Chinese food. No wonton soup or eggrolls on this menu. The food is to die for, and every time I've ever eaten there (at least 50 times), I'm the only non-Asian in the place. My folks found it and turned me on to it. Dishes I recommend are the spicy cold cucumber appetizer, stir fried lamb with green onions, Mongolian beef, and sesame chicken. It is hard to find, nestled in a remote part of the shopping center it's in, but once you find it, you'll keep going back again and again. Let me know what you think about it after you go. I've sent several friends there and they all rave about it.
There are a few great restaurants in town that allow you to bring your own bottle of wine and charge a corkage fee.
