Jesus. Shalimar on North Lamar. We used to have lunch there from time to time back when I used to work up North. The buffet would wreak havoc on your stomach, and if you survived the rest of your afternoon would be shot since you're so full.
Clay Pit is the white man's version of indian food. Personally, I much prefer going to more authentic places...
they go to UT and its an easy walk, its also a nice atmosphere. like i said, i don't know how much $$ they have, but if he wants to take her to Fogo then she ain't cheap. She's probably not down with dingy authentic places. think giana delorentes instead of anthony bourdain
Clay Pit is a freaking joke. Extremely overpriced and tasteless food. I call Shalimar "64" because they had 64 violations in one inspection last year. Food is disgusting. On side note: - Fish Daddy's on 35 is affordable and great. - Dimassi's on 183 - La Margarita on 35 Thats all I can think of right now since I don't go out much.
The Jackalope has a decent kitchen, but the main attraction is the fact they are open early. It's a good starting place for your downtown debachery. Today is their 2-for-1 burger special.
Right on. I figured you were joking, but I'm surprised that other people know of its existence. I didn't even think that it was still in business. Anyway, Austin is short on Indian food, and Clay Pit is definitely solid. Had my graduation dinner there since it's close to campus and they accomodate large groups well.
Madras Pavilion was shut down on multiple occasions for roaches, for what it's worth. The one in Austin on 183 is awful compared to the original one on 59S in Houston. And Fish Daddy's is the place you go with co-workers during lunch, not a place to take a girl. It's on par with Baby A's, Chili's, and Applebee's.
These are the places me and my girl frequent: Spelled Incorrectly... Chinese: Din Ho Italian: Bucca / Vespiao Steak: Texas Land and Cattle American: Golden Corral (lol!) Hidden Gems: 888 (pretty good even though the decor is crap)
Din Ho is definitely the best. Walnut Shrimp, BBQ Pork and Duck Combo, Sizzling Scallops, Hot and Sour Soup, and the Orange Beef are the best in town.
Seriously? Since they expanded, their food went to complete crap. It used to be one of my favorite places. Now, I don't give it a thought when deciding where to go for dinner...unless I want to punish someone.
If your date is a fan of places where she can eat, obtain money orders, and buy insurance, La Mexicana Panaderia on S. 1st is the way to go.
I was going to suggest Castle Hill, but I see it closed... Sad to find that out. That was a great place.
i consider myself, yet humble, an Austin food pro. far and away, the best value/ambience/food is Moonshine. then... Eastside Cafe Mother's Hoover's Cooking (elevated soul food) Hyde Park Bar and Grill P. Terry's (cheap burger stand) / Mooyah Iron Cactus (drinks n food) 219 West (more mature drinks n food, awesome happy hour food prices) Whole Foods (grocery and buffets) Wheatsville Co-op (sandwiches, wraps, juice, smoothies) Boomerang (Aussie pot pies) El Chilito (great tacos) RuDy's (ruby's is absolute crap) Amy's Ice Cream / Yogurt Spot Austin Java (much better than Magnolia Cafe, which is much better than Kerbey Lane) Saccone's Pizza Homeslice Pizza South Congress Cafe (great brunches/burgers, cocktails) Trudy's (best Mexican in the campus area) Spider House (best study/hang cafe, unless you go out to...) Mozart's (cafe, ice cream, pastries) Ginger Man (classic unpretentious brewpub) Draught House (less variety, but less crowded) man, i miss Austin
oh yeah: Juan in a Million (the Don Juan breakfast taco and horchata for <5 bucks.) Mr. Natural (vegetarian lunch buffet, pretty dang good) La Mexicana (Mexican bakery for pastries and breads. awesome.)
damn i thought it looked pretty empty last time i drove by there... that sucks, it was a good restaurant. and apparently i'm the only person on this board that has ever been to ranch 616, because it is a great spot and nobody ever mentions it. also, la traviata on congress has the best spaghetti ragu i've ever had.
