WOW, I did not know there was another Nick's location

His wife got the location on Bellaire in their divorce (it was named Gina's, but it was the same restaurant/food), and she sold it this past year and it is now the Union Kitchen. It used to be our favorite local Italian place. Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to head out there some time.

go to Thai Bistro, either location is great. there's one on buffalo speedway and 59, the other is further west on westheimer between wilcrest and kirkwood.

Yeah, she'll do Thai if she has to, but isn't a big fan. For Asian food, she really only likes Americanized-Chinese.

We really enjoy going to Cafe Moustache on Westheimer near Montrose.

They have a nice wine list and it is VERY competitively priced. We like their 3 course prix fixe menu (starter, main course, and desert) which is usually around $35 per person.

Atmosphere looks right, but prices seem to be about $10-$15 too high... (and we're not wine drinkers).

Check out their regular menu. I really dig their Chicken Provencal and it's $17.

Got it. How about this place? Every date I've taken there has really enjoyed it.

    For Italian? No question.

As to American? Under $20, I'd go to Zelko Bistro. It was just voted best new restaurant of 2010.

Now... For a few more $$, both Benjy's and Mockingbird bistro are outstanding, with the slight nod going to Mockingbird, IMO.

And if the weather weren't so f***ing cold out, Baba Yega is always a good atmosphere.

And when y'all are ready to just pig-out Texas-style? Try the CFS at Frank's Chop House. $18 and that and an appetizer will stuff the two of you easily.

That's good, but not really quiet and we we go there all the time (about every week or two).

    Americanized-Chinese? Yao has a restaurant downtown. :)

I'm not a big fan of Patrenella. Quaint, but the food is mediocre.

Zelco's looks good. I'd try that if not italian Not sure if it's quiet (no tile floors, etc). The chef came from Shade, so that's a good sign.

Yeah, you know... not authentic. Sweet & sour chicken, brocolli beef, general tso's, kung pao, etc.

Excellent call on Mockingbird Bistro, Fatty FatBastard. Casual atmosphere + superb wine list, though it may be out of the OP's price range.

Really? I've eaten there several times. One of the few italian places where I have yet to order something I didn't care for.

As for Zelko? I've heard great things about their burger, but haven't tried it yet. The corned beef and cabbage didn't do it for me, but everything else I've had there I liked. Just realize that the street it's on is under construction, so a GPS device will come in handy.

We dig Patrenella's as well. It has a nice ambiance and the food is very consistent.

I like Osaka (Westheimer, a few blocks east of Montrose). In fact, I think I'll go there tonight. It has music, but it's not loud whatsoever and you don't have to talk up to hear each other.

Plus, they usually give you a free appetizer of some sort ("on the house") and free ice cream for dessert.

Edit: Japanese food, in case you couldn't tell from the name. They have sushi, but it's definitely not the only option (I never get sushi). Dishes range from $10 to $20 (a few more over $20, but it's like lobster tempura and stuff).
