Great choice. That's a really good one too, with great performances by William H. Macy, Maria Bello, and Alec Baldwin.
Great movie about the hardships in New Zealands poorer ethnic neighborhoods. There was a followup film (not really related) called "Whale Rider"...another great Maori-related movie!!!
I third this. I was very impressed by the singing skills of Paltrow, Giamatti and everyone involved. Very good stuff.
Great flick. Really depressing though. BTW, the actual followup is called "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted". The only thing "Whale Rider" has in common with "Once Were Warriors" is Cliff Curtis(a crimnally underrated actor) is in both films.
I don't know if it counts as obscure or not, but I never hear anyone talk about it. Gangs of New York Daniel Day Lewis gives a performance worth a look, even if Leo Di Caprio can't seem to keep his accent consistent.
The Warriors - from like 1970something that movies was great 5 Heartbeats . . but I don't think that is obscure Rocket River
The Whoopie Boys - probably the funniest movie that nobody's ever seen Pieces - Low budget slasher flick from the 70's. It has one of my favorite opening scenes from a horror movie ever...
I thought of a couple others: The Matador- Quirky, little flick starring Pierce Brosnan as you've never seen him before. Proof- Film adaptation of the Tony Award winning play. The movie is a bit theatrical for my tastes, they could have rewritten some sequences. But the acting and writing are top notch. Glengarry Glen Ross- Speaking of top notch acting and writing, I'd say this is the king of play to movie translations. Might be the greatest combination of acting and writing I've ever seen in one movie. And what a cast; Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Kevin Spacey, and Alec Baldwin. Wow.
Good call! My sister-in-law introduced those two movies to us (my wife is from Hawaii and, naturally, interested in Polynesian culture). So, incorrectly, I assumed there was some relation to the two movies.
GO--advertising for this movie made it look like some crap teen flick, but it's actually very good. a little pulp fictiony but very well written and smooth.
Pi is a great movie. Darren Aronofsky, the director, also did Requiem for a Dream another great but disturbing movie and I saw the trailer for The Fountain which is his first big budget movie coming out soon and it looks really great. Speaking of obscure movies by directors who went on to bigger things another good but disturbing movie is Heavenly Creatures by Peter Jackson and starring Kate Winslet. Watching that you can see why Peter Jackson was chosen to do Lord of the Rings
