Dark City amazing visuals, mind bending plot and Jennifer Connolly. Insomnia Not the Al Pacino US remake, which is pretty good, but the Swedish original with Stellan Skaarsgard. Very intense movie. Happiness Just a little bit of nudity, no violence and not even much swearing but perhaps the most disturbing movie ever made. Below A great submarine thriller, a haunted Das Boot Heaven and Earth A Japanese Samurai movie not to be confused with Warriors of Heaven and Earth, also a really good movie. Amazing visuals along with great sword fights. Alternatively violent and meditative.
even though i've already replied to this thread... the winner is: After Hours directed by Martin Scorsese starring: Griffin Dunne Rosanna Arquette teri garr cheech chong catherine o'hara bronson pinchot etc.
Abre Los Ojos(aka Open Your Eyes) - Ok, granted it's not so obscure anymore since Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise remade it as Vanilla Sky, but the original film really messed with my head. Great mindf-ck movie. And to whoever said Bill Paxton movies suck, did you ever hear of a little flick called The Terminator? If you think that movie's bad, then I think you're a couple cans short of a six-pack.
I don't know if this could be considered an OBSCURE movie, but it's directed by Jim Jarmusch and is very funny for those who have a sarcastic/cynical humor to them. Stranger Than Paradise.
When I got here from MAY-hee-co, I saw MANY movies in the HBO afternoons that were entertaining and I have not heard of in the last 10 years... mostly PG13 or PG... like the following: THREE O'CLOCK HIGH JUST ONE OF THE GUYS - hottie Joyce Hyser ONCE BITTEN - Jim Carey's big break... his famous twitching alternating eyebrows scene in the clothing store
Ravenous - starring Guy Pearce, movie's about cannibalism, and it's a period piece. "He was licking me!" Grave of the Fireflies - basic premise: war sucks. Jinroh: Wolf Brigade - a really good retelling of the Red Riding Hood story set in a world where fascism won World War II. Boondock Saints - a cult classic, so I guess it's not obscure, but it's a good movie. Raising Arizona - someone mentioned it already in a previous post. I'm going to second it. Very funny. Transformer the Movie - not really good, but I like the cartoon animation and the 80's songs. And it's about Transformers. Heat - not obscure, but Al Pacino and Robert Deniro is in it which automatically makes it good.
Ice Pirates was GREAT. Also loved Big Trouble in Little China. A really obscure recent movie I saw that I liked was Primer. Extremely low budget film about a couple of guys who invent a time travel device (I know, sounds pretty typical, but it's actullay quite different) and encounter some strange paradoxes.
'Buying the Cow' - Ryan Reynolds, Allysa Milano, Briget Wilson(Sampras), Jerry O'Connell - really funny movie 'Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead' - Andy Garcia is really good in this one
I forgot this one. I think it's really good. The Missing Gun - A foreign film about a cop who loses his gun and how he tries to figure out where and how he misplaced it. Very good.
Local Hero- One of my favorite movies of all times. Oil company tries to buy an entire scottish town on the coast to build a refinery. Bittersweet comedy with a Houston connection. The Mighty Quinn- I cannot recommend this movie strongly enough. Denzel Washington plays the chief of police on a fictional caribbean island. His boyhood friend is accused of killing a visiting American businessman with ties to the CIA. Incredible screenplay, cinematography, acting, and reggae soundtrack. Go. Rent. It. Now. Duets- Picked this up on a total fluke and was really impressed. Gwyneth Paltrow, Huey Lewis, Paul Giamatti, Andre Braugher, Maria Bello. This movie is about lost souls on the karaoke circuit. Huey Lewis is a surprisingly good actor.
Sounds like a retread of Kurosawa's Stray Dog, which has been overshadowed by his later masterpieces. I'd also recommend High and Low. Some other recommendations: Martin (George Romero's take on vampires) Near Dark (Another great take on vampires) Gospel According to St. Matthew (the BEST movie about Jesus - just be careful to avoid the badly dubbed version) Woman in the Dunes (if you can find it) Aguirre: The Wrath of God I'll also second Living in Oblivion
I second that one.. Also a movie that is really obscure was Freeway 2.. crazy, funny and overall bad, but in a good way..
