You knuckleheads who think this info is credible better review what real medical professionals think about this such as the above post by ACL1. It doesn't add it up to be anything less serious. Yao's not coming back for 6-8 weeks fellas.

actually area lot slower in growing than finger nails. IN healthy patients they take several months to completely regrow sometimes up to a year. But you do not need a toenail to function normally. again a toenail infection by itself is not painful enough to need "several weeks" of recovery.

I think the source is legit. Xinhua news was touted as the throat of communist party of China. It used to be the source of all China's news, but that probably has changed since China has loosen up on the news reporting standard. Still, to me Xinhua news is much much more trustworthy than any thing sina fabricates.

The article states the infection wasnt to the bone as widely reported in US. Yao talked to the reporter and doesnt think it's that serious. The recovery seems better than expected. The tone is very optimistic. I can imagine Yao's injury had to be huge in China and Communist party would like to clarify the matter to have social stability before the Chinese lunar year.

Unlike you, Rocket fans are smart enough to know that the Rockets struggled when T-Mac AND Yao were both out. How do you explain a loss at home to a crappy Toronto squad? No, I'm not ignoring this post. I will ignore your posts in the future though.

An update of Yao Ming's toe injury and about his recuperation from sina.com.

    http://sports.sina.com.cn/s/2005-12-26/1454741371s.shtml

    1. Yao Ming checked out from hospital on Christmas eve, and went back home to Windsor Lake & Park for a rare and tranquil Christmas with his family.
    2. According to Eric Zhang, his cousin, agent and leader of Team Yao, he was 1 day late in his scheduled check-out from the hospital because he spent the 23rd in the hospital going thru Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy with the aim to accelerate the healing of his wound and kill the bacteria. The process brought certian level of sufferings and hardships for Yao Ming, but he is willing to take the therapy as he is determined and eager to return to the Rockets as soon as he possibly can.
    3. Yao Ming indicated the stay in the hospital was a rare but comfortable experience for him..."just like staying in a hotel." He further indicated that his infected toe, even though swollen and painful, was not as serious as people thought. He was very concerned to learn that he needed to be operated on his toe when he returned to Houston right after the LA Clippers game, but Tom Clanton reassured him that his toe needed to be operated on, but it will be once-and-for-all cure and there will not be any other sequela.
    4. Yao Ming can now walk by himself, but he somewhat felt uncomfortable, as he felt his toe became a bit shorter. But Tom Clanton just told him to relax, as the callus that had formed around his toe had been excessively thick, so now that the callus had been done away with after his surgery, then naturally he felt a little bit strange compared to what he used to.
    5. As a matter of fact, the recuperation of Yao Ming is much better and faster than Tom Clanton had expected. He even joked: "We are now all relieved, and I can go away for my vacation." According to Tom Clanton, Yao Ming was originally expected to take 3 different kind of anti-biotics, now the prescription is reduced to only 1 kind of anti-biotic.
    6. Even though he was injured, Yao Ming kept following his team, and watched every of the Rockets game from TV, and felt bad and sad whenever the Rockets lost. "I know the team now desperately needs me. I only hope I can recover soon to return to court."
    7. The HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy) brought him some hardships and sufferings; it was like 30-meter deep sea diving, and quite painful for the ear drum. But Yao Ming expressed that anything and pain that can speed up his recovery to return to play for the Rockets, he would be willing to try. According to his medical expert team, HBOT hopefully can cut short the recuperation period up to 1/4 to 1/3 of normal recuperation time.
    8. During his hospitalization, his Rockets team mates came to visit him by his sick bed. Yao Ming indicated he missed his team mates very much, and said: "If you ask me what is my Christmas wish, I would just wish I could return to court as soon as possible."
    9. As demanded by the doctors, Yao Ming needs to avoid any kind of sports/exercise in the next 3 weeks after the operations, at best just a bit of strength exercise of the upper body.
    10. This will be the longest rest for Yao Ming in his 4-year NBA career. Yao Ming said: "I only wish I can keep my form and shape, and not get fat in the next few weeks. "
    11. So in his spare time, Yao Ming just spent it on reading books, learning English, surfing the Internet, chatting online with his friends (and possibly his computer games).
    12. Yao Ming is quite positive and optimistic that barring any accidents, he will be able to return to court by the 2006 All Stars in mid February. Eric Zhang's optimistic estimate is 4 weeks, but added: "I said 4 weeks, meaning Yao Ming will be able to retrun to court, and resume training with the Rockets. Whether he can resume playing, it will be dependent on so many other factors: his form and shape, his strength and conditioning etc. Well for player like Tracy McGrady, after missing 7 games, he also requires time for readaptation."
    13. Yao Ming indicated he would try by all means to make the 2006 All Stars game. He was happy that the All Stars will be held in Houston cos it will save him alot of time and energy to have to fly around for the All Stars Week-end, and he thought as host, he will be able to enjoy "home court" advantage and treatment, and for him, this kind of experience would be very rare.

Good. One thing that stands out is Yao's agent says Yao should be able to return to Rockets in 4 weeks.

not sure if i'm looking into this too much but noticed something about this article...

    only several games? wtf?

    Preview: Jazz at Rockets

    Associated Press
    Tue, Dec 27, 2005

GAME: Utah Jazz (12-16) at Houston Rockets (10-15).

    TIME: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

LINE: Houston is listed as a 7-point favorite and thje total is set at 172.

Much was made of Tracy McGrady`s absence during the Houston Rockets` early-season struggles.

Now, the All-Star swingman is learning how difficult it can be to win in this league without adequate support.

McGrady and the injury-plagued Rockets will try to snap out of their most recent funk as they host the Utah Jazz.

The Rockets lost all eight games without McGrady earlier this season when he was sidelined with a nagging back injury. Upon his return, Houston turned things around and won a season-high five straight games in a 6-1 stretch.

However, the Rockets have once again fallen on hard times, due mostly to an infected left toe on the foot of All-Star center Yao Ming. Yao had surgery Dec. 19 on the toe, and the Rockets have lost three of their last four games, including Friday`s 108-86 setback at Denver.

McGrady scored 17 points, but went just 4 of 17 from the field and was held to one point the first three quarters as the Nuggets collapsed on him without a significant low-post threat. McGrady had a season-low seven points in a 94-81 loss to Toronto two nights earlier.

The Rockets have six injured players in all, including Yao, Jon Barry and Derek Anderson. That has left the team with only nine active players available, including CBA call-up Stephen Graham, Moochie Norris and Lonnie Baxter, none of whom would be seeing more than mop-up duty were it not for the injuries.

Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy, who called Friday`s effort "what you would have seen from guys that had played on lottery teams" refused, however, to use the injury spate as an excuse.

"It goes beyond adversity," he said. "This is an attitude situation. If there is adversity, so what? Anybody can be great when it`s going good. There is no tough set of circumstances. We were very weak-minded when it came to dealing with our situation tonight."

Yao is expected to miss several more games before his return.

The Jazz got a boost Monday from the return of power forward Andrei Kirilenko, holding on for an impressive 105-102 overtime win over Memphis. Kirilenko, out for three straight Utah losses due to back spasms, finished with a season-high 24 points and 14 rebounds.

He also made two key defensive plays down the stretch as the Jazz improved to 8-4 in his starts this season. Utah is 2-8 when Kirilenko doesn`t play.

maybe "several games" was just meant as an understatement or something. i dunno.

yeah... maybe i should have the "random idiot" title for a while (would be cool to have some kind of a title... i've always wanted "more than meets the eye"). can't expect a guy to come back after sugery so soon. so i guess several is four to six weeks. :(

I translated that article and i came up with Ming getting hold of a bad egg roll and winding up with a case of toemain food poisoning.

Someone at the Hyperbaric chamber should have instructed Yao in how to equalize his ears as the pressure increased - unless of course his previous ear injury prevents equalization but I wouldn't know why this would happen.

Equalizing is as easy as yawning really big. Very useful when your plane is descending to land - and why many small children cry on the descent - ear pain.

FYI - CD was on 790 AM. He mentioned the estimates for different folks coming back starting with the longest to shortest term. Yao was mentioned first being "awhile" with the next rung down of 2-3 weeks away from coming back (JB and DA).

Just another nail in the coffin of this thread started by some wishful thinking.

Well, it looks like there is some contradicting reports about Yao Ming being able to walk independently after checking out of the hospital.

Here is the latest status report from sina.com.

    A bit of American history:

It was reported today that President Eisenhower successfully completed his first bowel movement all by himself since the heart attack. More news and pictures at 11. :D

If recent Rockets history is a guide we will know more about January 28th.
