I definitely like Sigur Ros a lot.. I have a long attention span and really enjoy music that is subtle and has many textures. I think they're tight.. my 2 cents..
1st and foremost I think that Creed and other bands like them is what is ruining rock and roll to an extent. They just seem so boring and I think have no creativity. I listen to a lot of music, except the blues, country, and R & B. I like everything else though. For the most part. Rock Classic Rock Classical Rap Rock Techno Jungle Drum and Bass Trance Hip Hop and some Rap Oh yeah all the pop stuff sucks. Oh yeah i still listen to Industrial and Punk and Ska also along with oldies from the 50's. There is a lot of great stuff out there. As you could look at my harddrive with 50 gigs of music. Or my record and CD collection. I love music even though i cant play any instruments really Ask about any types of the music listed and I could recomend something I think you would like.
At the end of the day go with what you like, i just violently oppose mass studio produced with effects all over everything, especially the vocals. For me originality, substance and creativity are of utmost importance. Speaking of something with all that try a local Austin, Texas band called SPOON there new cd Kill the Moonlight is sensational. Also check them out at http://www.spoontheband.com/
I haven't been able to find any new music that does anything for me in years. I seem to be stuck in the mid-90's, except I don't smoke near as much dope now. Rage broke up......Deftones haven't done crap in years.........TOOL will probably shut down soon....... screw it, maybe I should've just stayed high another ten years.
I have the Vines CD, and I've only listened to it once. I bought it really cheap at Best Buy though, it was like 11.99 or less, can't remember. The Hives kick ass. I'd love to see those guys live. All of the songs on that CD are great IMHO. The Strokes, I like what I've heard, but I don't think they are as good as people say. They are cool though, unfortunately, by trying to do something different to avoid gimmicks, they pretty much have become one. A band that thinks they are in the 60's. I don't think these guys are the Saviors of Rock, but they are a breath of fresh air for music in general where we've been bombarded with manufactured pop for like half a decade now. These guys just represent that music can be very good and listenable, with little producing and a simple garage sound. I don't know who the saviors of Rock will be, but that can't be a garage band, at least not their whole career. The important thing now is to see how these guys grow, change, and evolve from album to album. That's what made the Beatles so great, they pretty much started out as a teen heartthrob band and grew into the best rock band ever. U2 use to play simple garage punk, then hit gospel and blues in the late 80's, and then in the 90's they became even cooler by getting more electronic and experimental. Why do you think people love Madonna so much? She never makes an album that sounds like her previous one.
"Cool" Music is not necessarily good music. If the stigma of "Cool" gets put on your music by some critic or industry insiders, then people go and buy your mediocre music and play it because its cool, and people like to feel cool, or that they are listening to something "different." "Cutting edge," "Cool," "Different" are good labels in music, but that's all they usually are...labels...and once that label gets stuck, people buy to feel cool or different...even if the music isn't any good, or mediocre at best. For some reason it has gotten uncool to like popular stuff. So if its unpopular or different its cool. Then people jump on the bandwagon and a band sells millions of copies because it was cool and they were different... Its cool and different to like Radiohead...music is mediocre. Its cool and different to like the Strokes...music is mediocre. Creed is popular...so uncool. Brittany Spears is popular...so uncool. Nickleback was different and cool, then everyone like them, so they are popular...not uncool because they are popular. In 50 years, guess which will be playing on the Oldies....not Radiohead...not the Strokes...it'll be Creed and Brittany...for better or worse depending on how you look at it.
By that rationale, the Beatles wouldn't be cool because they're the most popular band ever. However, they obviously *are* cool with practically every music critic - plus, they're generally accepted as the best/coolest/most innovative band ever. Same could be said, to a lesser extent, about Bowie or Nirvana. So I don't see how your argument holds water.
The Beatles were not only different, and "cool", but also fantastic musically. Radiohead blows. "I'm a Creep" - Worst song ever. I want to eat my poop and puke whenever I hear it. Creed, on the other hand, rules!
Supermac, I disagree that in 50 years from now that Britney Spears will still be heard on the radio. She is a fad just like Leif Garrett was. Yes, I know, you are saying "Who in the hell is that?" That was the male version of Ditsey Spears back in the mid 70s. 25 years later not many people have ever heard of him. Same thing will happen with Ditsey, well music-wise. People will probably still be talking about her because she'll probably go into nude modeling and porno films after her music career "stalls".
36 Crazyfists(In The Sig) Nonpoint(Great and pretty melodic) Boy Hits Car(Different but great) Blindside(One of the best Christian Rock bands out there) Chevelle(Another Great Christian band) Stone Sour(Harder than the rest but they are good if you like that kind of music) Breaking Bejamin Seether(Love their song on the radio, CD is pretty good) These are great Rock/Hard Rock bnads I recommend giving a listen to.
