I loved Bolin. Was very lucky to have seen Zephyr and saw him play with The James Gang. My favorite "solo" LP is Private Eyes. I wore that puppy out!

Stupid Girl? Really? That's like the only song anybody ever knows from them. If you've listened to ALL they're albums then you would know they have tons of better songs. But the rest of the songs are really good too. I just think Stupid Girl isn't they're best.
oh I would know? lol so music isn't a personal preference? I have both the Year of the Spider and A Different Kind of Pain in my itunes library, and I've listened to all of the songs from 13 Ways to Bleed Onstage multiple times on Pandora. I really just like Stupid Girl. It is what got me into the rest of Cold's music. I really like the angry lyrics mixed with a non angry chorus. Plus there is a story behind when/where I heard that song. Pretty good band.

TSB almost never gives out 8's on debut albums: Score: 8/10 "Hot on the heels of 2009's OK? EP, Stubborn Tiny Lights vs Clustering Darkness Forever, OK? (hereafter referred to as STL) has just unveiled its debut LP, The Infinite Regress. Four tracks total nearly an hour's worth of stellar music, covering the gambit of post-rock motifs: drastic dynamic changes, interesting time signature shifts, soaring guitar lines, vocal and choral sections, a delicate underpinning of strings, marching snare rolls, and all the rest. The impassioned performances lift the material to such an apex of musical strength that only the hardest of aestheticians could bring themselves to poke holes in it. Even so, STL seems to be challenging the listener to do just that: the name itself is lifted directly from the liner notes of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Yanqui U.X.O., and STL's music echoes that of the Canadian giant quite a bit. Such is the nature of influences, they do filter down in one way or another - though STL wears them on its collective sleeve to the point that whispers of 'derivative' and 'generic' are, to a certain extent, deserved. However, while the songwriting is firmly situated in post-rock, it is at the very top of its genre. This should be seen not only as a promising thing for a young band but also as a wonderful thing for anyone who has enjoyed the music of the big names in post-rock over the years. It lives on, digested and re-envisioned, and represented this time by the small town of Cedar Falls, Iowa. The album opener, "Riverrun", begins as a spacey affair, powered by melodic guitar lines and undercut by an enjoyably thick fuzz. After a time it gives way to a jazzy bass break that builds into a rocking climax before dissolving into a lengthy section of piano rolls and flittering backwards guitar. It builds to one final climax before giving way to the second track, the 18-minute "Sieve of Eratosthenes", a well-crafted and satisfying display of nearly every tool in the band's formidable repertoire, from singing to glockenspiel. The mood ranges from thunderously dramatic to startlingly personal, and the juxtaposition is pulled off with amazing skill. Creative bass licks undercut the more dramatic parts in a unique way that pulls them back from the brink. The sweetly melancholic section that follows a somewhat sentimental vocal break strikes a universal emotional chord that communicates more successfully than any lyrical passage ever could. Even the anticlimactic dénouement feels, in retrospect, like a deserved end. The closing track, "Familiars", is also a decent song in its own right, featuring a lighter tone and a catchier melody than the other entries, but it is overshadowed by its predecessor. At 20 minutes, "Through Valleys" is unequivocally the centerpiece and standout track. It is broken into several movements that explore similar motifs in different ways. The length of the piece and the tonal similarity of the sections test both the listener's stamina and the players' ingenuity. It is here that the performances truly shine; the playing is powerful, communicative, and exuberant, engaging the listener repeatedly and throughout, such that the length becomes a non-issue. Each section seems to be better than the last, and the song marches on to an epic conclusion that very well could be counted amongst the best moments in instrumental rock. Over the song's duration the band hits the brooding western feel of Marco Beltrami's score for 3:10 to Yuma, the tense and politically minded chants of A Silver Mt Zion, and the hypnotic groove of MONO's "The Kidnapper Bell", all the while wholeheartedly claiming the material as their own. The track is a mammoth-sized microcosm of post-rock, a history of the genre as heard from the American midwest, a bizarrely inspirational mix of nostalgic referents and future forebodings. It traverses confidently over great distances and varying landscapes, and it contains within it some wildly successful peaks. The visceral conclusion crackles with so much emotional charge that the listener's hair will stand on end. Such an experience will put any concerns over influence and originality completely out of mind. The fact is that when a band's best moments are all so good that it is difficult to choose whether this one or that one rocks harder, the band is clearly doing something right. The real concern is whether forgiving the referential name and songwriting will result in STL's future works being equally beholden to all that came before. Judging from the quality of this album, there isn't much reason to doubt that the band has purged its demons in one fell swoop, and that future releases will be ever more distinctive. After all, one can only pay homage at the feet of an idol so long before wanting to move up the ladder. If all goes as well as it could, STL will find itself in the position of the idol before too long." -Stephan Sherman http://thesilentballet.com/dnn/Reviews/tabid/54/ctl/Details/mid/438/ItemID/3501/Default.aspx The Infinite Regress is one of my favorite releases this year. Also, here is a funny/sad/awesome story about me and the band... Spoiler So Kyle from Stubborn Tiny Lights sent me an email about their show in Austin, I told him I didnt think I would be able to make it because of work/life etc... the next day @ 5 o clock pm. He sent me another email that they were going to be playing in a few hours on Milam. So I went. Just me and my wife. There was nobody else there. They didn't post the Houston date on there website/myspace/facebook etc. I dont know if they didnt have time to put it up or what...but not one person besides me and my wife showed up. I felt really bad at first, but then really super special when they (along with Andrew Weathers)set up and played for almost an hour and a half. For me. and nobody else. It wasn't a pity party either. They friggen rocked like the house was packed. So, yea...I try to plug them whenever I can. anyway, here is some really crappy video I took of them playing that night. The song is Through Valleys. You can download The Infinite Regress for free at their bandcamp page... http://futurerecordings.bandcamp.com/album/the-infinite-regress
