My favorite area to check out new restaurants as of late is the stretch of Hillcroft between 59 and Westheimer.

There are a number of great Indian/Pakistani/Middle Eastern restaurants and shops along that strip. I haven't been in all of them (there are so many), but some of my favorites are:

London Sizzler Tandoori Bar & Grill
    Bombay Sweets
    Darband Shish Kabob
    Abdallah's Restaurant and Bakery
    Shwarma King

And I enjoy shopping at the Jerusalem Halal Market.

Do any of y'all enjoy that stretch of Hillcroft like I do?

Is London Sizzler a buffet? It's right next to my workplace and I want to try it out but unsure of the quality.

Man, comparing Indian/Pakistani and Middle Eastern is kinda like comparing Chinese, Italian and American food in the same sentence.

I do enjoy that stretch of Hillcroft though. I could do away with the traffic.

Not when I've been there. Quality is very good. It's a London style Indian restaurant.....great Chicken Tikka, saag paneer, biryanis. They have all the Brit beers on tap, a snooker table in the back room, and they show international sports on a big screen. It's quite the hangout for British expats on Friday and Saturday nights (they stay open late). Check it out....it's good.

I agree that the comparison is weird, but they are all represented on that same stretch of Hillcroft. I love it!

Is the one in Galveston good?

Hey, I got great feedback about Greek in Austin here... I'm going to Galveston very soon to chill for a few days with the family, mostly in the bed, the pool and the hot tubs. The first couple of nights will be sans kids, which is totally groovy (Grandma keeping the kiddos), then they'll join us. What I'm wondering is, any good ideas about places to eat in Galveston, especially seafood? If any of you fine folks have some, I'm eager to hear about it!

I had lunch at Mary's yesterday, the food is good but not great, me and my brother paid $24 total for two meals (i had chicken kabab and he had beef kabab platter), the price including two drinks and taxes. So not bad.

Cafe Lily is better, and Fadi's is better as well, Fadi's bread is the best.

Overall, the best value is the Midetarranean Palace on Dairy Ashford, it's $8.99 I believe (last time I was there) and they have a huge buffet of every possible middle eastern recipe you can imagine, as well as lots of desserts choices. Overall value is pretty good.

However, if you are a big fan of shawarma sandwiches, which I am, the best chicken shawarma in town is at Shawarma King on Richmond@Hillcroft

I hate Dimassi's, tried it couple of time and wasn't impressed.

Hope this helps those interested in trying some good Middle Eastern cuisine.

Oh yah, the best Persian restaurant in town is Kasra's on Westheimer near Gessner, it's in the same lot as Yao's restaurant, the best Persian cuisine in town.

Like I said, their chicken shwarma is heroin food, and I am a full blown addict.

Then how come I don't see you there often? ;)

Anyways, I still get the sandwich but it doesn't taste as good when you hold the garlic sauce, since I have been on a diet for a while now.

    Fadi's shawarma is good too.

You're damn right. I think the beef kubideh extra spicy is calling my name. I always get that along with the rice that has pistachios and cherries on it. Yum!

Dimassis is just not good at all I'm sorry. They purposely make the food more bland and heavy so people wont eat too much. I guess all buffets do that.

Fadis has the best hummus i have ever tried in my life.

Kasra is good too, but a little over priced....Food is comparable to Fadis but more expensive.

Alrighty I guess it's about time for me to chime in since i am persian and all and tell you my run down of the persian restuarants here in Houston and which one is closest to being authentic and tastes the best in my opinion comparing it to home cooking of course :D

    1. Darband - This place has been around for a long time and i have been going there forever. They weren't my favorite place for a while because some of the other places on the list were damn good but have gone down in quality while Darband has basically kept it's quality and stayed consistant. IT's basically a fast food Kabob house and it's worth it.

    2. Kasra - This place is definently good. The Kabobs range from good to okay sometimes. They seem to have bad days where they just aren't as good as another day. Don't know if it's who prepares them or what. We ordered some this past sunday and it was alright nothing to brag about compared to the last time we were there. Some of their side dishes and appetizers aren't that good either compared to home made but still a good eat.

    3. Shish Kabob Cafe - This is right there next to Bestbuy on Westhimer and HWY 6. I used to go there a lot when i was working at best buy and it's owned by a family and always run by them so the food is always good and tastes home made. Definently another quick service place you should try out.

    4. Garson - This used to be the best place for persian food a few years back it has slowly decline and it sucks. My father is good friends with the owner and used to work together back in the day. They had a good cook when they first opened and he recently left so the quality of the food has gone down hill for the prices they charge. They get more of a varied crowd and not many persians going there anymore so they have added a lot of different dishes to the menu which aren't persian but overall it's okay. I don't go there much it's more the atmosphere and the nice restaurant style that your paying for rather than the food.

    5. Caspian - I wouldn't recommend it to be honest with you. The food is not all that. I live like 2 minutes away from the place and i have been there 1 time. It as well used to be good but over the years has really declined and isn't worth it.

Basically i would recommend either Darband or Kasra just depends on what kind of mood your in, Fast food or sit down restuarant...

Some other places i go that aren't persian and the food is actually good and i enjoy their hookahs and chill.

Ranoosh - good food quick like a fast food place
Fadi's - definently a good place if you wanna pick up something nice and quick.

Nice list, Khalil, I have been to Kasra and it's pretty good, I tried Garson a few years back and they were OK, but nothing special.

Ranoosh is that place on Richmond and Fondren, right? Man, it looks beat down like some of those ME restaurants that are actually in the ME, it definitely looks like a hookah place more so than a restaurant, there are lots of people that hang out there at night.

There's a Greek place on the seawall in Galveston called Olympic-something. Best Greek food down there.
