There's a lot of things that happens at a lot of clubs in Houston. For an example, bartenders serve who they want to serve. Drink Houston is known for that. There's this guy that has dreadlocks that is just like that. I stop going over there when all the ghetto folks started going there.
Anyone who likes to hit the bars should come out to the 2nd Annual Montrose Crawl on Halloween Night. It's a pub crawl I help organize. We have bars like Poison Girl and Boondocks that have been recognized as the best in town. Each stop has its own charm.
Is it going to be man-tastic? I made the mistake going to numbers years a ago. Not that I have anything against gay folks but I wanted to know what the crowd is like. I don't want to be hearing George Michaels or it's raining men if you know what I mean? No not really. It's really bad now. I never seen soo many girls using sharpies for eyebrows.
Well, there are lots of pictures on the website from last year, so you can judge for yourself. The crowd is pretty much evenly divided between men and women. These aren't gay bars, so there isn't a gay vibe. If someone was really looking for that, they'd be much more likely to go to Numbers or the gay clubs. Really, it's a pub crawl, not a disco. I'm with you. I have lots of gay friends, but I don't think I would have fun at South Beach or someplace like that.
Spoiler Regardless, I might go if convinced enough by my friends. I suck at getting costumes each year though.
Anyone been to Fix? I think last time I went they had hookah on the roof..but my memory is kinda hazy...is that fix lounge?
There are times when I feel like dressing up and going somewhere nice, but in those instances, I'd much rather go to the bar at Hotel Zaza than to the artificially trendy places in Midtown or on Washington. Even if I'm with a girl, I have to wait in line for half an hour, while the dudebros who are friends with the bouncers get in right away. It's so contrived and cheesy, especially in a city which prides itself on being relaxed and non-pretentious.
The bars on the crawl route aren't gay bars - very hipster-heavy, though. Of course, if you decide to duck into Bartini after leaving Catbirds, nobody will judge you
I should emphasize that these are all bars, not clubs. These are hip places, true, but they're also laidback. Anyone would have fun on the Crawl. I organize it, and no one would call me a hipster - I have a $3 haircut.
Now that sounds like a man with experience. Duckin out? Anyways... Is there going to be any dancing at these bars?
Maybe Etro and Catbirds, if any - they'll have DJs. Boondocks and Slick Willie's will have live bands, but not for dancing really. Again, none of these places are clubs, so there's usually no dancing.
Wow... Nobody mentioned Roxy, Spy, and Crystal? O wait, those were the places 10 years ago! Man I feel old......
Yeah, I'm pretty far from a hipster, but I love drinking at those places. Very cheap and strong drinks, plenty of cute girls, and absolutely no snobbery or elitism. As for dancing: none at Catbirds or Poison Girl, some at Etro, plenty upstairs at Boondocks.
I wouldn't rule out a couple of bars that have truly stood the test of time: "The Duece" (aka the Marquis II) and Kay's lounge
Kay's is fun, and it's right next to Volcano, which is probably my favorite place in town - they make some great drinks, such as their pimm's cup and caipirinha, and the crowd is pretty chill. The Marquis smells like feet, though
Yeah I haven't trolled those bars in years (the glory days as a scholar at Rice). Now I typically hit the ones along Washington Ave or maybe Midtown if I'm with a younger crowd. The wife prefers a more sophisticated group of people at the bar than what midtown typically provides
shameless plug Tonight I'll be DJing tonight at Saez and Zouk. I'm also at Rich's (Thursday) and Roxy(Friday night broadcast on Hot 95.7) www.djriddler.com
