I don't try much vietnamese stuff. I liked the suggested items at Mai's that a friend showed me. Taco Cabana is good, cheap mexican food. As I've said, I'm going to try and open one in TN. (this will take a while, if ever) People outside of Houston love this idea. Is it Chuy's or Pappasito's? Of coursae not. But it is good for its value. Katz's gets a bad rap. I've had many good sandwich's there. Try the reuben. It's good. Week old dogsh*t, I have yet to try, so I'm not the best to compare these with.
bah. Posted before I saw your other input. I haven't been to Mai's in three years, so it could very well have gone down the pooper. I haven't been to Kenny & Ziggy's, but my friends don't like it because they feel it is too expensive for what you get. Of the Houston Deli's: Kahn's>Katz>Jason's Deli>Murphy's Deli>Zero's>Schlotzsky's>Quizno's>Blimpie>Subway.
I'm siding with Tex. TC is really no cheaper than a good hole in the wall Mexican joint, and tastes like ass unless you get a breakfast taco when youre drunk as hell at the end of the night. I haven't been to Mai's in years, so I can't comment on it now. Katz is a joke. It's nothing more than a fake "deli" for yuppies. This is one of my favorite websites: Chowhound The forums are a great place to learn about awesome food in the area. On this forum it's hard to get a good suggestion. Some people definitely know their ****, but it's hard to filter those gems from the crap people list. If you ask for good cajun, you get people suggesting Popeyes or some chicken dish at Chili's.
I stand by my assertion. Unless drunk, you would be insane to eat there. And as for deli's - and sticking with the westside theme - Leibman's Deli on Memorial b/w Kirkwood & Dairy Ashford BLOWS AWAY all competition.
Didn't they have a fire there in the past year or so (they were closed the last time I was over there)? Have they reopened?
Suprised no one mentioned Yao's Restaurant & Bar on Gessner/Westheimer. Never ate there - any good? price range? http://www.yaorestaurant.com/
Looks like a cool idea but they've got a bulletin board system from 1995 it looks like. For info on Houston restaurants nothing beats http://www.b4-u-eat.com
I just checked out the site and the reviews are np different than those here. You have to sort through miles of crap and try to guess which are accurate.
You know, most of the places I go out to eat in Htown when I visit the fam are all asian, like I've never seen anyone but asians eating there. I don't know if that means non-asians wouldn't like the food or if it's just not catered to non-asians. I mean, I like the food, and most of the asian community likes the food...oh well. I guess I understand, cause if non-asian walked in and saw that he/she was the only non-asian, it would be kinda weird, and thus I don't see many non-asians thinking "hey let's go over there and try their food cause it looks pretty popular". flava of the month: Cafe Boda on Bellaire east of Wilcrest (I think...I know for sure it's East of Strake Jesuit High School)
To me, Leibmans is a wine store that sells sandwiches, rather than a deli. But, to each his own, I guess.
I always feel weird being the only white person in a restaurant. I try not to let it stop me, but I also wonder what everyone else feels about me being there, especially if I don't know the language or other elements of the culture. The people I eat with are often uncomfortable trying new and exotic things, so I just go by myself to the casual ones where you can order something at the counter to take home. At least, I did before I moved out to a town that doesn't even have any such options... I guess, since I'm white, I'm supposed to like white people food. Meatloaf, mashed potatoes, fried chicken with skin on, jello salad, homestyle vegetables... well, what if I just don't like it? Sorry, but bland mid-American food is pretty dull compared to almost everyone else's. I do things like shopping at Asian markets and buying grocery products that are targeted toward the Hispanic market. I still somehow feel like I'm overstepping my boundaries.
no kidding..it's freaking huge. they also charge $10 for a Reuben!!! I would expect that at Kenny & Ziggy's...not at Leibman's!
imo, Mai's has always been terrible. Your paying high dollar for small quantity chinese/viet fast food. I'd hate to say this, but some of their dishes is the exact same dish that I sell at my Chinese resteraunt for $3.50. As far as the quality of food is concerned, I have no idea. I only went there once and Im nevr going back.
