Breakfast is, by far, my favorite meal. My idea of xanadu would be to have a giant breakfast buffet every day: waffles, eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, toast, oatmeal, grits, breakfast tacos, orange juice, milk, mmm...
Now here is a man who knows what he's talking about! I've been there only 1 time, but it was great. The best thing was that I couldn't finish my food (very rare) and the bill was less than $12 for my gf and I, drinks included. EDIT: Forgot to mention, I'd have to say I've grown to like a place called "Alonti's" down in the tunnel downtown. The variety isn't too big, but what they have is great and it is VERY reasonably priced. I know there are at least 2-3 of them in the tunnel alone. Pugs
my house! You haven't lived until you've had frozen waffles slathered with a layer of peanut butter...
You should check it out. Great traditional breakfasts, omlettes and smoked fish platters. Plus they serve lunch....sandwiches, soups, salads. They are open from 6AM until about 4PM, and they serve breakfast all day.
There are about 8 LaMadelines all over Houston. The one on Kirby in the Village has some smokin' hotties in it during the lunch hour M-F.
I've heard nothing but good things about that place & have been meaning to try it out. Personally, my favorite breakfast is @ Goode Co. Taqueria. I like the porkchop & eggs. Bunch of my friends like the catfish & eggs. Oh, the Buck Fever w/ venison sausage is good too. Another favorite is Spanish Flowers. I like the Ranchero Omlette, but their Chiliquiles is quite possibly the best plate of cheese in town!
Good call! There is no breakfast place in town that compares to Juan in a Million in Austin, however.
Best handshake in Austin! I swear we've had a thread or at least taken a thread off topic about Juan in a Million before.
OK, here's my take, so far: Baby Barnaby's-went here yesterday. What a cluster-f*** that was. My friend and I decided on Barnaby's. We get to the one on Shepherd at 10:50. We have no idea there is a breakfast cut-off. The waiter comes by 10 minutes later, after we order our drinks and have been looking at the menu's and says "sorry, guys. Breakfast is over". I look at him, and reply, we came for breakfast, and we get up and leave. Highly unprofessional, and besides, why, on a Sunday, would you stop serving breakfast at 11? In a restaurant? That cooks everything to order? Freaking r****ded. Then, we drive back downtown to Brother's Taco House. It is closed! On a Sunday! Damnit! So we find out that Baby Barnaby's serves breakfast until 2p.m.--again, the crappy waiter at the first Barnaby's could have filled us in on that piece of info. Main problem with Baby Barnaby's is that it is a tiny shack about the size of a garage. We had a twenty minute wait where all you could do was stand out on the patio and make fun of some wandering guy in a stupid hat. We finally get seated. Different menu items. I got the Green eggs, which were eggs scrambled with spinach and artichoke hearts. Good, but not fantastic. All in all, a decent breakfast locale, if you can stand the wait. Le Peep-I haven't been here in 5 years, but it was always an above average breakfast. Problem is there aren't any near downtown. Leibmans Deli-Never been here. Wouldn't expect breakfast here. I might try it out. La Madeliene's-I hate bakeries. I don't know why, but I've never been a fan of sweets. They have a good Tomato soup, but I'm not sure I'd do breakfast here. Waffle House-I'd love to know where these are. They are all around Memphis, so I go there every now and then. Hash Browns-Covered, Smothered, dices, and dipped! Those are awesome! Imagine Hash Browns topped with onions, cheese, tomatoes, jalepenos, ans chili! These rule. Kolache Factory-There are several of these around Houston. They're not bad, but I prefer Shipleys Kolaches over these, personally. Breakfast Klub-I have GOT to go here! I've heard so much about this place, but the line always seems too long, so we always end up going somewhere else. This is definitely on my to do list. Bibas-Hmmmm, a greek breakfast? That sounds interesting enopugh to give a try. Frank's Grill-Where is it on Telephone Road? How far away from Downtown? I may definitely have to give this place a try. NY Bagel Shop-I've never been big on bagels. Just not my cup of tea. Ever since the Bagel Manufactory closed in the Village, I've pretty much been bagel-free. Annie's-Damn! I forgot about their breakfasts! A little far away these days, but I need to revisit there soon. Alonti's-That place has decent breakfasts, but only if you work downtown. Kinda like Doozo's dumplings, and Zero's Deli. Tel-Wink Diner-I'm gonna need a littler more to go on this one. Pappasitos-OK, I'm tossing this one in. Has anyone tried their breakfasts? A friend was telling me they are fantastic, if you're willing to shell out $15 for breakfast. I'll probably try this place out, also. Anyway, that's my two cents. EDIT: I'm hardly ever in Austin, so I'll leave those alone. Mama's Cafe-Huevos Hoffbrau is awesome. Great place. Goode Co. Taqueria-This also sounds like a place I'd like. I already enjoy their lunch fare. I'll check it out.
I think you're right. I nearly had my hand broken the first time I was in there! My favorite Juan story was one morning when I was driving back from Waco to Austin. I decided to stop off for some breakfast, like I did at least twice a week, so I exited Cesar Chavez from 35. This jackhole in a Envoy wasn't paying attention and nearly hit me as I exited. I honked my horn, but luckily didn't give the driver the finger, only shook my fist. I got a little nervous as I drove to Juan's because this Envoy was right behind me the entire way and even pulled into the parking lot behind me. Turns out it was Juan! As he came to my table, he apologized profusely saying he didn't know what he'd do if he hit one of his best customers.
Gimme any ole taqueria over Pappasito's for breakfast any day. You'll pay half the price and enjoy it twice as much. Oh, if you speak Spanish at all, a good little taqueria is Gorditas (well it's full name is something like Aguascallientes de Gorditas ... or something like that) off of Bissonnet between Chimney Rock & Hillcroft. They have an advertised special of machacado con huevos ... but if you ask them real nicely for machacado con huevos a la mexicana, then they'll make that happen for you. Breakfast plates come with beans, potatoes & chiliquiles (corn chips w/ red sauce, cheese & a touch of sour cream). Good, authentic Mexican breakfast.
Fatty: Franks is easy to get to, it's not too far from downtown, probably 10-15 minutes. Get on 45S, exit 610W, exit Telephone, go left under 610 it's about half a mile down on the right. Pugs
