And if they play against any normally fit man, they would get rolled. But an 80 year old playing golf just might beat you.
Sage words. And yet, I constantly cost myself strokes by overswinging on the tee box. If you're ever in Boise, e-mail me first. There is plenty of water here, so all our courses stay in really good shape.
I used to play a lot when I was younger and even won a few junior tournaments back in the day. that said, while i dont mind going to the range, golf is not a sport that takes much athleticism (i get a better workout taking my gf to the mall) and i get kind of depressed knowing that this huge amount of space is being used up by rich people who have too much time, and would rather waste their resources wasting more resources instead of helping others, but thats the world, what can you do?
What a thoughtless post. Why aren't you out helping others instead of wasting resources reading and posting on this BBS? Do you watch T.V., play games, go the the mall with your gf, or anything else for recreation? The percentage of land mass taken up by golf courses in the U.S. in infintesimal. Should that be turned into strip malls? Condos? Low income housing? How much will you contribute? I've worked hard all my life. In the last several years, my hard work has paid off. No one ever gave me anything. I got my degree at night, while working full time during the day. Try not to be depressed because I choose a form of recreation different than you. By the way, I am by no means rich.
And it's just horrible that all of that land that could be used for parking lots and shopping malls and bowling alleys instead is used for grass and trees and wildlife! The horror.
Can we get a picture of Oliver Miller? or Tractor Traylor? or Shaq even? Daly is the exception... and not very good anymore either! Golf is more work than it appears to be in my opinion. I've never played a round that didn't poop me out.
"I'll tell ya, country clubs and cemeteries are the biggest wastes of prime real estate ... dead people ... they don't want to be buried these days ... ecology, right?"
My pet peeve is people who cheat in scrambles. A classic example is the guy who slaps at his shot on the green like he's just messing around, knowing that there is a closer shot that the group is going to putt from, but if he's shot actually goes in he's going to count it. I once played in a scramble with a buddy who on a the long drive contest hole counted his drive what was not on the fairway. He won a new driver.
Dude, you don't even wanna know... I ran the Monday tournaments at a country club for the last 8 years and my conclusion is that everybody cheats in every charity scramble. Don't even enter if you think winning is important The #1 cheat is mulligans, nobody counts an attempted mulligan if it doesn't go in. They take their club lengths back in to the fairway, out of bunkers or even back in bounds. 5' sidehill double-breaker? That's good, pick it up. I routinely see scores under 60, it usually takes less than 58 to win and yes I have seen a 48 posted in an NFL alumni tournament. I always tell tournament directors to just give cheap trophies for winning and save you your big donations for door prizes. Especially if you are having a silent auction after golf, that's the only way you can keep the golfers from leaving as soon as they see they didn't win.
i'm entitled to my opinion (and opinions are like a*holes), but i did quit golf because i found it more rewarding to teach in schools in low income areas in my spare time. I'm all for recreation, but i felt golf, even though it was fun and I got damn good at it, was particularly wasteful for a recreational sport. Maybe because i'm utilitarian. I know nobody's going to change because of it, and i'm not criticizing anyone for their own choices, that's just my reason for choosing not to play golf anymore (in addition to the fact I have no more time). I have the same stance on people who buy SUVs and live in the city, but like i said, its a free country.
A lot of what you said goes for me too GP. Your profile doesn't currently allow for emails, so drop me one instead. I'm about an 8 index as well. If you are avoiding playing the weekends because of slow golf, you could join our group sometime when we have an opening. We usually tee off at 7:30 and finish around 11 to 11:30 Saturday and Sunday mornings. Otherwise, I'd be happy to have you come play any weekday Tuesday to Friday after 3:30 - I'm almost always at the course after I get off of work at 3. Anyway, give me a shout - I think we are the two most golf-crazy cc'ers around.
I like golf cuz I like hitting little balls with clubs. I also like it when a cute girl is driving the beverage cart. I am like Gene. I do not like to play on the weekends. I much prefer taking a mental health day from work and playing during the week. When I retire, I am sure I will be playing twice a week. Only 18 years to go!!!!!!!!!
Lucky b*stard... I've got 30 years to go. I can chip and putt very well. But it takes me about 5 or 6 strokes just to get to the green. Can't control my drive at all. I'm not slicing or hooking all the time, I'm just all over the place: sometimes straight... sometimes slice... sometimes hook. I always make good contact on the clubface. Don't know what to do to fix it. -- droxford
