    DaDa, and anyone else,

I have never played golf--but I have lately been getting a strong interest in learning the game. Would you suggest immediately getting a professional's advice in lessons or something, or would you first suggest I just go out there and try it to get a feel for the game?

if you can I would do lessons from the start. That way you don't start off with bad habits.
I've never had lessons but sometimes wish I would have.

First, you need a buddy who has an extra set of clubs you can borrow. It would be a shame for you to buy a set if you decided not to pursue it.

I recommend that you do not take lessons or practice at a range first. This is not where you fall in love with the game. Instead, set up a tee time, go the course about an hour or two early, and practice at the range. Try the L-to-L drill I described in this thread. Let your buddy give you some basic advice. Then, go play a round. When you play, you should expect to do some embarrassing things like whiffing (swing the club and not hit the ball) or hitting the ground with the club head.

If you're in Houston, play the President's course at Bear Creek. It's a cream puff course that's perfect for a newbie.

I guess I didn't read your question close enough. I would do both. Start playing as stated above. But also start taking some lessons (don't wait until 2 years after playing all the time)

Yeah - on your first game, you're not going to play well, no matter what lessons you take or how much you practice. Just play a game with a buddy (with some time on the range just before you play). Don't expect to play well. Just try to have some fun and enjoy yourself. After you're addicted (which should occur after the first game), then you can take some basic lessons and practice more at the range.

I only play by the original method - beheading my enemies in such a way that their noggin finds itself in a rabbit hole.

Trying to fill out a foursome (best ball 2 against 2) for Sat @ Raven Nest in Huntsville.

    Anyone interested?

    Sorry, I missed this...

Actually I do own a set and, in fact, they are in Houston.

I brought them there to play a round about six years ago and, for some reason, I needed to leave them there. I'll check on them for you; one of my nephews was using them for awhile but he's no dedicated golfer.

I'd be happy to lend them to you... or for purchase. I haven't played golf but once since that time six years ago.
