Great job by Phil. But he was very fortunate that he got such a great read from DiMarco. I really doubt he makes that putt w-out DiMarco. But either way it was a great afternoon of watching the Masters on TV.
An eagle at 11, two holes in 1, Els two eagles. the winner shoots 31 on the back 9, an ammy shoots 31, The King's poignant 50th and last trip up 18, Jack birdies 18 to have a shot at the cut, Tom Watson gets a standing O in memory of Bruce Edwards. The Master's rarely fails to yield some of the best drama in sports.. I loved Jack's win in 86, Crenshaw's and Freddie's wins, Norman's meltdown. But this was the best of the best.
Phil! Phil! Phil! Did you see that grin striding up 18? What a finish... I got verklempt for him-- literally trembling with excitement, choked up in the throat, and wet behind the eyes. He has endured so much criticism and remained such a great competitor, gentleman, and NOW champion. BTW, don't you love those FirstTee.org commercials?
I'm a casual golf fan, but I decided to watch the entire final round today. Rare for me especially when there's an Astro game on at the same time, not to mention the fakers and queens. I'm glad I did because that was about the most exciting day of golf I've ever seen.
man, could you imagine the pain if that putt lipped out and he lost in a playoff? thank God that didn't happen. me and my uncle were rooting for phil big time (maybe it's both being lefties, i don't know), and everyone else just wanted to see some good golf and i was so damn glad for him to finally get this win. 5 birdies on the back nine for the title? amazing. amazing last round all around.
WTG Phil - no more cracks about choking to put up with. That was the most exciting afternoon of golf I've ever watched. I guess the changes they made to the course paid off - talk about drama!
What an incredible day and weekend! Sunday, Easter morning. I got Good Friday off for a three day weekend. In the par-3 Master's tournament, two guys sank holes-in-one, and Arnold Palmer almost did the same! Got to see Arnold play in his final Masters tournament, and make some fine shots. Got to see Nicklaus play in (what is probably) his final Masters, and make some fine shots. I predicted the winner! (see the first page of this thread) After finishing the third round with a tiny lead, Phil struggled on the front 9, and gave up the lead to the strong play of Els, who was on fire. But Phil poured it on in the end and regained the lead over Els on the very last shot of the tournament. Phil earned his first major victory. Phil earned his first green jacket. Without a doubt, this was the best, most exciting golf tournament I have ever watched. I was literally at the edge of my seat throughout the whole round. Fantastic! They oughta sell a DVD of this! -- droxford
I don't care much for golf, but when I heard some commentator from ESPN radio on Saturday saying that Phil won't come through because Phil doesn't want to win ("prefers to lose", yes, those were his words), it made me mad and wanted Phil to win so badly. I am really happy for him to finally get over the hump. I hate it when people (especially media people) call out athletes by saying they have "no heart". IMHO, majority of athletes that have reached high level of competition have hearts. Sometimes, you are just not good enough to win. The last time I checked, at the end of any competition, there is only one (person/team) left standing, it doesn't mean the losing (person/team) have no heart(s).
I would like for the record to show that I called this on THURSDAY at 10:53 a.m. Man I'm tired of being right!
