Swopa-I always considered Foyle more of a defensive powerhouse than Dampier, but I'll defer to you, as you watch GS more. While it's true they'll improve, Hughes will never be a great 3P shooter (he has a long way to go to be an average one) and Jamison won't ever become a sniper either. Fortson obviously won't be much of a shooter, and neither Foyle nor Dampier is exactly a sweet shooting big man. ------------------ The Serious Police are watching. DON'T THINK SO!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!! ------------------ Ugh, Another Rockets off-season....I'm gonna need a keg of Pepto-Bismol.
Yes! Another excuse to post!! Foyle is like Smeg and others have described Cato -- someone who blocks a couple of shots, but gives up lots of easy baskets the rest of the time. He's not a smart defensive player (although he's a very intelligent person off the court), and he's simply too short to ever succeed as a starting center. All you really need to look at are the team defensive FG% stats -- when Dampier started every game for the previous two years, the Warriors were in the top half of the league. Last year, with Foyle starting virtually the entire year, they were near the bottom. As I said before, you're right that the Warriors' Achilles heel is outside shooting, especially in the starting lineup. Fortunately, one of their strengths is offensive rebounding. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Swopa (edited September 08, 2000).]

Swopa -- I don't know if you've covered this yet, but I'm curious as to who you think has the larger upside -- Cato or Dampier? I think someone mentioned before that Cato lacks many of the fundementals that define the great centers of the league (conservation of motion, hands, etc) and while I concur, I disagree with the point that certain fundamentals can't be taught. If anything, Cato's preseason showed promise of incredible potential beneath and the only thing, in my mind, holding Cato back is a lack of fire and dedication. I haven't seen enough of Dampier to make any conclusions either way. Nada, zilch. Your thoughts? Lynus -- I'm going to eat your children next. ------------------ It doesn't matter if I have a signature!
Stone Cold, the hard part of answering your question is that I've seen as little of Cato as you have of Dampier. Like you, I'm an agnostic when it comes to players picking up fundamental skills -- it seems like sometimes they can, sometimes they can't. For instance, Foyle and Olowokandi both suffer from learning basketball relatively late in life, so that they have to think about things that are instinctive to other players (and, as Kareem noted about Olowokandi, while he's thinking, the play is passing him by). But it's not surprising that Olajuwon (another foreign-born hoops convert) was quicker to master defensive positioning, since he was a soccer goalie, where that is a key element. Both Cato and Dampier apparently share some traits -- holes in their offensive game, and a doubtful level of dedication (though both have been reported to be working much harder this summer). Cato reportedly doesn't have any low-post moves, whereas Damp actually has decent moves and good form but can't hit the shots (mostly a mental thing, I think). I think it's a tossup who will improve more/faster in that regard, if either does. Dampier, though, is a genuinely good defender -- not only in terms of positioning but "little things" like deflecting entry passes and double-teaming pick-and-rolls (as coach, PJ Carlesimo's philosophy was to always double the PG on these plays, and I first noticed Dampier by the way he'd chase them out nearly to halfcourt and then recover, whereas more established centers like Hakeem and Shaq would simply take a step toward the PG, then retreat without ever leaving the key). Also, in a game against Denver earlier this year, McDyess was having his way with Foyle, Marshall, and Caffey, racking up 25 or so points by early in the 3rd quarter. Dampier came off the bench, and shut him down -- McDyess didn't score again until Damp left the game in the 4th quarter. Can Cato become that kind of defender? It seems like he has the mobility; he just needs to fill out both above and below the waist (if his frame will let him do so) and learn the defensive nuances of the game (Dampier was already a highly regarded defensive center in college). I don't know enough to guess whether he will or not. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Swopa (edited September 08, 2000).]
Okay, okay. I'm sorry, I just had to post. Is that so wrong? When's the next time you think there'll be a 9-10 page thread? I couldn't resist. ------------------ Sometimes I think I'd be better off dead. No, wait, not me...you.
Venus Williams is uglier than Karl Malone and Patrick Ewing combined. I dont know how the hell she won. Lindsey will take care of the this Predator though. For real though, dont you all think that she looks like the Predator from the Arnold movie? ------------------ Fun Police Says: 1. Stupid threads are not FUN! 2. Swopa -- Cato could be a force if he wanted to -- athletically he's sound, he can run, he's explosive. I'm really hoping all this talk of an improved work ethic was just glitzy wrapping for potential Cato trade packages. Offensively, Cato's game really just needs a bit more dedication and focus to become effective -- the makings of a mid-range jumper and some nice inside footwork are already there. Defensively, while I haven't lost hope, its gonna take more than an offseason to bring this boy up to par... At any rate, Dampier does sound the better center of the two, just my 2 cents... As challenging as it is to pile on this thread as some sort of Tower of Babling, it will be a similar challenge this week to take it down. who's with me.....don't respond here... ...wait for it...wait for it... this thread will not survive the weekend, or i will get banned.
