You guys are too hard on this kid. What the hell is he supposed to do with Nellie's 7.5 minutes a game showcase? We all know that Nellie tends to shy away from traditional big men. I don't see this situation as an indictment of O'Bryant, just a case of mismatched parts.
I'm sorry man but there's absolutely no way in hell you could convince me O'Bryant is either better right now or has more potential than Bynum. O'Bryant's strongest offensive move is his hook shot. It was very effective on the college level against no-namers during the regular season and for ONE game in the tourney against a much slower and confused Aaron Gray. He was basically a non-factor against Kansas and Memphis so I don't think its a stretch to say that lone game against Pitt bolstered him into the first round and the relative scarcity of quality big men made him a lottery pick. O'Bryant is a strong rebounder and decent shot blocker - two important qualities for NBA big men. He appeared to have a promising post game that although definitely neeeded polished, he still appeared to be capable of scoring on NBA big men. The problem is you can blame his lack of success this year all you want on Nellie and his refusal to play him. You can't argue that he's looked like garbage out there when he did play though. This post game you are ranting & raving about, where's it been? All he did when he got in this year was shoot the mid-range jumper (29% from the field). O'Bryant simply needs to get more aggressive and work on his post game. He's also kind of soft. The rebounding and shot blocking are already there but he's yet to show me he's anywhere near ready on offense to be trusted with a role in any rotation. Bynum on the other hand, is the real deal. The only thing holding him back right now is his age and conditioning. Bynum's post skills and footwork are simply astounding for his age. He can score on anybody and is absolutely HUGE (7-0, 285 lbs) - there aren't going to be many that can push him around. He's also probably a better shot blocker than O'Bryant too.
anyone think we could swing a deal for him to be our future backup C? what happens after mount mutombo retireS?
Thinking in the same line. GS has a C/PF they can't utilize, and we're full of short, fast guards. Dunno if the salaries match, but I hope we can trade Rafer for this guy.
Yeah trade Rafer and lose our only true point guard for a rookie center we don't need right at this time.
^Yup. That's definitely what will happen. Patrick's raw and will be stuck in the end of the bench under JVG. But at least we can acquire a decent prospect. I don't want this to become another Rafer debate, but suffice to say that I don't mind losing Alston.
i don't understand the big deal, the guys is young and raw, a stint in the NBDL will only help... he will get to play
Weslinder, Not trying to make some "I'm told you so!" post but just take a look at Bynum's numbers in his past two starts against Sacramento and Denver..... 15 pts (5-6 FG), 11 boards , 3 blocks, 2 assists in 33 minutes vs. Sacramento 19 pts (8-9 FG), 10 boards, 6 blocks, 3 assists in 29 minutes vs. Denver He still has a ways to go defensively and conditioning wise but he's simply light years better than O'Bryant right now.
Nellie sent him down because he has no use for a big man. If Nellie had Yao, he'd have him sitting at the top of the key waiting for jumpers.
That's fine, clearly we're not going to agree on this. I think Bynum has 10x the potential O'Bryant has and is 100,000x better than him right now. But it's all good.
