What's the point of your post? Seriously there was no need for this. The kind of post that other people would get rookied for.

I remember when I used to go to the Rockets games it was like $15.00 buy one get one free. Yes, it was a long time ago, Bobby Joe Reid, Allen Leavel, Major Jones, Moses Malone, Calvin Murphy, those were the players back then.

Yes, Hollinger has us above 90 % already as well. But how does that make sense? Even if we beat Utah, Phoenix is exactly two games behind us (if they win their next one). There are still 8 games to play for each team. If Phoenix beats us, they tie the season series. If they win one more game and we lose one more game...what's the next tie-breaker? But in any case, it's also possible that we lose two more than them after that. Is that a less than 4 % chance?

I wonder how exactly they calculate that.

Tomorrow I'll be stepping into TC for the first time for any reason. The last game I saw was in Yao's rookie year, but technically I spend well over $120 a year just to dvr the games.

The Rockets ticket website drove me insane. I've built websites, and I got timed out twice on that piece of crap. Additionally, they actually have the balls to charge $5.00 to pick up the tickets at will-call?

Slight irritation here. I'm taking an 87 year old man to the game and I couldn't even find out what precautions I should be thinking about.

It was a miserable experience with the Rox website.
I like this team very much, and I'm a hardcore Rockets fan, but this will probably be the last game I will ever attend.

Morey can tweet all he wants.

I didn't see your post before, and despite my rant I'm usually polite. :)

I'll be in section 417 row 9 wearing my UofH red cap (The Big E was my first hero, went to school when Akeem & Clyde were there), and my name is Richard.

It'd be cool to meet a Clutchfan, how do you pronounce your monicker, "Sheonza"?

Statistical models are studies of likely scenarios, that means it makes programmed assumptions. Such as.... you lose games on the road and you lose games vs good teams.

Look at Phoenix's schedule, they have an onslaught of either road games or home games vs. playoff teams. The computer models are probably already counting Phoenix out. Beating Utah tonight puts us a full game up over the statistically likeliest challenger for that spoiler spot that kicks us out of the playoffs, especially since Utah gets to play Phoenix at home at the end of the season.

Plus each win is increasingly more meaningful as the season goes on as there are less games to be caught by Utah, Phoenix, etc.

So yeah, if Houston wins tonight we will make the playoffs.

Remember, even if PHX were to beat out Houston, Houston can still be in the playoffs if, say, the Mavs or Denver lose enough games. A simplistic way of thinking about it is that, given that it's a race between 5 teams (6th place to 10th place team) for 2 spots with the Rockets being at the top of the 5 teams, the Rockets need to maintain their lead over just 2 out of the 4 teams behind them in order to keep their spot. They have a lot of paths to victory out of the realm of possible outcomes.

So, the 90% or so chances given by the various simulations and the 96% if we win number given by Morey actually make a good deal of sense, particularly when you consider the strength of schedule for each of the teams.

The playoffs are not enough. I want us to shoot for the 4 spot. Has someone figured out the likelihood for that?

According to the simulations done by basketballprospectus.com, the Rockets have a 10.3% chance of getting home court advantage in the first round. Not great, but not trivial, either.

Getting home court advantage, by the way, does not mean that the Rockets needs to have the 4th (or above) seed. Remember, all division winners are guaranteed a top 4 seed, but home court advantage is still strictly matter of records. So, it is possible (though not likely at all) for the Rockets to end up with a better record than both the Lakers and the Clippers (or be tied with the Lakers but better than the Clippers, and then having tiebreaker over the Lakers), and still end up as the 5th seed but holding home court advantage over the 4th place team.

Anyhow, here are their latest numbers:
