Thank god there's other umps around that know the rulebook. Crazy play: runner on 3rd 2 outs, throw back to the pitcher hits Choo's bat (Choo is in the batters box) and rolls out to 3rd. Runner on 3rd scores as the HPU calls it a dead ball. Bannister argues, conference of umps overrule Scott and score the run.
Unbelievable ... My problem with the whole thing is that the umpire called dead ball before the runner crossed the plate. Would that not be something like an inadvertent whistle in football? Toronto could say they stopped trying to get the ball and to get him out when the ump called dead ball (though we all know they couldn't have gotten him out).
Brilliant move by Choo. More batters should start doing that. Stay in the box, extend your bat/arms in the throwing motion of the catcher, brilliant!

It's a judgement call, and there has to be intent on the part of the batter to interfere. Choo does that exact same move after every pitch.
Also, if Martin isn't being lazy (especially with a runner on 3rd), he gets up to throw the ball back and none of that happens.
