The path of the Special Prosecutor is a wide one. Blame the Democrats; I think they championed the law. There are friends, acquaintances, and strangers. Linda Tripp and Monica worked "together." They weren't bosom buddies. Linda STARTED taping (notice the emphasis on "started") because of the peculiar nature of a subject that she knew was likely to blow up and she didn't want to get caught in the middle. Really, how hard is that to figure out? I've not heard that Tripp had a propensity to tape all of her phone conversations... just these with Monica that tended to be about her relationship with Clinton. That is pretty focused if you ask me.
It's funny that she claimed all along that they were friends, but now they weren't. Have you listened to any of the tapes? She sure as hell plays her off as a friend.
I saw it last night myself. I thought the guy (not the guy with the BJ queen statement) was right on, ML didn't really take responsibility for much of anything. Of the following 4 players in all this: ML, LT, BC and KS, they all look pretty bad. Here is who I think look least worse to most worse: BC: We knew the guy was a horn dog, but even Monica admitted she made the overtures to him. It was a national embarrassment in no small part to him, but the end result is he stayed in power despite lying about sex. He also was a politically and economically an effective president, though not many people would want him as a close friend and nobody would want him around their daughter. His personal weaknesses and stupidity cost our country dearly, but there is a larger context of the positive public contributions that he has that none of the other parties have to buffer his perception to most all but the politically extreme. ML: She was really, really dumb throughout the whole thing (though not as clueless as she tries to lead you to believe IMO), and certainly acted in self-preservation and self-promotion mode throughout the whole thing regardless of the effect on her country. If she had just not immaturely by talked about the details of her relations with BC to Lt or anyone else (not kissed and tell), the whole thing would have stayed private like it should have. She had to now the political mind field on an affair with the Pres, but she put her desires to “express herself” above the concern of everyone else. At the same time it also is clear late in their thing that she really was pretty unstable and delusional, so in some ways her human frailties are understandable. There never would have been a perjury case because ML name never would have come up. Further, if she would have cleaned her dress, the whole thing never would have gone anywhere--and though she would still go through the crap. Basically she didn't give a darn about anything but herself--and she got money and exposure from it all even if she now may think the personal and family cost was too great. The passive victim card at least with regard to BC was total BS--she knew BCs reputation and she had a track record of this kind of thing. KS: what a pompous ass and pretty darned ruthless person. He let his political ambitions trample any sense of decency. Publishing the whole record of testimony, intimidation tactics on ML as if it was a murder cover-up or the like, setting a "perjury trap" for BC about sex when the council was started over far more serious matters. Basically, 60 million dollars and so many years, and all there is to show for it was perjury about sex in a civil case--all of which never would have happened (the perjury never would have happened) had the council not deviated from its initial course in digging for unrelated mud. He will go down historically as a shameless politic who abused his power as a prosecutor to try to meet political ends (remove BC form office) that were in the end failed. He failed both in ends and means, though he is saved from the bottom of the historical dung heap by the next person. LT: what more can you add about her. I don't think it was just for exposure and money as RM95 said, but about her wanting at all costs to make BC look bad. It is clear she had an huge ax to grind, yet anything BC ever did to wrong her personally is unclear. Like KS she will go down in history as a bitter, shameless and cruel person blinded from a sense of humanity (if she ever had one) by her ambitions. In my mind she goes down even worse than KS, because she used to pretense of being someone's friend to totally manipulate MC and embarrass the country. Further, she wasn't a politician and meddled on her own that had nothing remotely to do with her job (in KS case you new he was an a@@hole searching for anything to embarrass the president, and this was the role everyone knew, there wasn’t deception or the abuse of personal relationships). The destruction she did to other persons and the country had nothing to do with her job or legal obligations--they totally came from her free will as a despicable and ruthless human being using the pretense of looking after her friends. She is at the bottom of this big dung heap, I guess the only positive thing you can say about her is she didn’t off anyone in the process. My 2 cents anyway
he lied under oath in the grand jury convened for the Paula Jones trial....which was a sexual harrassment trial. she was an employee of Clinton's when he was Governor....certainly even you can see the relevance of how he treated female employees at the White House (like, oh, say, Monica Lewinsky!) to that case. I'm involved in a case right now where fradulent transfers are involved...the other side is trying to paint a client as being an "insider." in order to be an insider, under the law, you can be romantically involved, a business partner, a sybling, etc...there's a wide array of relationships which qualify one as an insider. the judge upheld a discovery request about the sexual relationship of the couple involved, despite all that.....the question came up as to who would be deciding how a sexual relationship would be defined. my point is, in this case, sexual relationship is far less important to the crux of the case than it was in Paula Jones' accusations of sexual harrasssment by Clinton...and yet, even in this case, questions as to that sexual relationship are permitted in the context of discovery...whether or not they're admissible at trial is an entirely different matter.
Saying that Linda Tripp is any more forthright or honest than Bill Clinton or Monica Lewinsky is like saying John Dillinger is more forthright and honest than Al Capone or Ma Barker. Face it, BBS friends of mine...Linda Tripp, Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky are all skanks, just like George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, Hillary Clinton, etc. etc. etc. Politics equals prostitution, whether you are running for office or not. Politicians, and those who surround them, are the biggest money-grubbing whores on the planet, regardless of ideology and party affiliation. OK that's it. My fingers are sore and my brain hurts.
