The recent pandemic and our beholden nature to China has been exposed. We are incapable of standing up on the world stage because we don't make our own medical supplies and are essentially at their beck and call. Now with the war in Ukraine and Russia we see how refusing to domestically drill for our own energy independence further hurts us as we are funding Putin's atrocities. Not to mention other markets are being hit by relying on Putin for gas and now they can't do much. Oh and countries relying on Ukraine for food are also going to see price spikes which will rattle the wheat and cooking oil market in a time when food prices are already spiking. This house of cards we've built benefits the billionaire class still because the price swings don't affect their lives nearly as deeply as people with very little money. You know, the working class. Recently George Takei, who is worth $14 million, said we should be patriotic and pay more at the pump. Well, easy for him to say! It is time for domestic production of oil, gas, and other goods to increase so we have jobs for the working class and money in their pockets. It is time to admit that globalism isn't always great and some things need to be handled in-house for national security interests and our own economic interests... which actually aren't that far removed.
The US is already Energy Independent. That actually happened under Obama. The problem is Oil is Market driven. Producing more oil now is not going to change the price for years.
Some of the efforts started under Obama bc even he wasn't as big a moron as Joe Biden about energy policy. But Energy Independence happened under Trump. And no we are not energy independent. We are importing our oil and hurting efforts at home to produce domestically. I'm thinking you are defining energy independent in a way to not hurt the image of a certain party. Did you hear that whopper from Jen Sucky?
please explain the steps that should be taken to increase oil and gas production, and then explain the timeframe and impact of such actions on the GLOBAL market and prices for oil and gas. I hope you do a better job than your comrades basso and commodore, who do not appear to know the first thing about the industry or how oil companies behave.
1. Allow us to buy more oil from Russia, Iran, Venezuela, and any other hostile country we wouldn't want having leverage over us or benefiting from us. 2. profit time frame is about a month. the impact is that prices go up and we are screwed even more no matter what we do bc we aren't drilling at home.
https://babylonbee.com/news/biden-s...-so-we-can-start-drilling-for-oil-there-again Biden Sells Alaska Back To Russia So We Can Start Drilling For Oil There Again ANCHORAGE, AK—The deliberate and premeditated invasion of Ukraine by brutal dictator Vladimir Putin has forced the US to reassess the importance of energy independence. With this new resolve, the Biden Administration has taken its first step toward increasing oil production for Americans by selling Alaska back to Russia so we can start drilling for oil there again. “Folks, nobody wants to ruin America’s beautiful Alaskan wilderness with oil trucks and drilling rigs, come on!” said President Biden in response to questions he thought were coming from a house plant in the West Wing. “But I’ve never had a problem getting oil from Russia, so there you go, go get him.”
Hmm, if only there some form of national platform to make ourselves energy independent. Some sort of "Reconstruction", or "New Deal"
True globalism has it's problems but globalism might actually save us here. Russia itself is far more vulnerable to sanctions now than it was when it wasn't part of the global economic system. We are already seeing cracks among support from Putin's base of oligarchs and as the sanctions drag on it very well might weaken Putin's position even more among the Russian populace. I will stress that sanctions aren't guaranteed but they take time to work and this war is still less than 2 weeks old. What is most important to remember is that while we complain about inflation now inflation wasn't an issue so long because of Globalization. The ability to manufacture cheaper, get goods and other resources cheaper has been due to Globalization. If we didn't have globalization we would've been paying much more all along, likely technology wouldn't have developed as fast given that manufacture of things like semiconductors would've been much more expensive along with getting rare earth minerals for things like battery technology. Not to forget that many things we take for granted like eating bananas and pineapples in the middle of winter would be very hard to have without Globalization. Finally I will keep emphasizing with or without a Globalization a major war will raise costs. The global economy at WWII was nothing like the one we have now but to fight that war cost were high, which were controlled by price controls and rationing here. Most Americans have forgotten what it really means to fight a war.
First, US oil production is market driven. The US can be energy independent whenever it's necessary. Certain methods like shale oil are only profitable when the price per barrel is high enough. Second, fossil fuel energy is a losing game. Renewables are cheaper than fossil fuel, it's just a matter of production and scale. Solar, specifically, will take over energy production. Third, trade has always been global. See the bronze age collapse circa 1070 BC. Fourth, high paying low skill jobs are never coming back. It's only going to get worse. Robots are going to take over all those jobs, and then they will take over skilled labor. If you are worried about the little guy, it's time to turn off fox news, get off facebook and start thinking about policies like basic income and single payer health care. Raging against globalization and socialism at the same time is brain dead.
Energy independence is a myth. If we produced all of the oil we needed every year, it still wouldn't stop prices from spiking during an energy crisis elsewhere. Why? Because our oil/gas companies sell to the highest bidder. If oil demand spikes in Europe, they don't make sure we get our stuff at a cheap price first before taking care of Europe. Price goes up for everyone.
Big Lie. The US is drilling more than ever. However, when Oil Prices are low....Oil Companies and contract drillers "Stack" rigs because it is not profitable enough for them. You will have HUNDREDS of Rigs mothballed and removed from service. The Oil is still there, they choose not to take it out of the ground. Now, those Contract Drillers are scrambling to get the rigs back up and running. Which means moving them to their locations and scrambling to hire and re-hire guys to do the drilling. Iran Nuclear deal, the one Republicans HATE and what Trump withdrew from, would have allowed to increase Production in this time of need. Now, they have to wait for a revised deal to be completed.
How are all these right-wing free market lovers now all of a sudden against the free market? Funny to see @dachuda86 sounding like a socialist.
