It doesn't matter what you try to rephrase it as to make it fit to your misguided political narrative - they phrase it as "in the name of Islam".

If you've followed the leak scandal from the beginning, the government's responses has been to do whatever it takes to bury the story. Letting the government guess to what extent Snowden and to the reporters he shared the information is part of the game they're playing because if you haven't noticed, they have outright lied to everyone, including Congressional hearings and committees, about the extent of the surveillance programs.

Pretty moot question if you ask me.

I wonder if everyone who was posting here realized that even posting in this thread put them on an NSA list lol

hands so deep in the cookie jar.

so to recap---the NSA monitors Muslims for political reasons, probably breaks secret FISA laws, and commits racial slurs while doing so. jolly.

Yet the GOP doesn't call for investigations on this the way they do for investigations against the IRS because of a few tea party groups who all got approved for their applications.

The real question that has to be raised now is: is there any chance that top government officials don't follow orders from this rogue and powerful spin-off of the US government?

Just think of the power they have. Everyone, including those who should be giving them orders, is at their mercy. Just a huge sovereign threat. The whole thing has really gone rogue for what looks like at least a couple of decades, and you guys have had absolutely no idea as it was being slipped into your lives.

There's really just no way out until Americans elect someone outside the one-party two-faction system. But that can't happen when these tools are at the disposal of the one party. Inescapable loop.

Not mentioned anywhere in this thread:

All of these FISA warrants were issued, and according to the documents, expired, between 2002 and 2008, after which the law changed.

For someone who has railed a lot against government power you are defending one of the biggest abuses of government power.

yes that was the warrantless wiretapping scandal of the mid-00s.

There isn't any indication that that is ongoing today.

So spying is OK, so long as there is a national security rationale behind it.

How far should we take this? If the government spots some violent, anti-government groups, are they justified in spying on anyone who espouses anti-government ideologies?

How could there be any indication that it is ongoing today when they keep these things secret?
